Did anyone go alone to choose their wedding dress? Or go and choose with husband to be?

I don’t really have anyone I would go with, so looking like I either order online, or take 1 year old or 1 year old and dh to be. Is that just weird?

I went on my own, with my fiancé, and with his mother and sisters.

The one I actually bought was chosen when I was on my own.

I did it all on my own. Not because no one would have come with me, but I didn't want to be too swayed by anyone else's opinion.

I bought what I wanted from etsy and then had it altered to my specification by a seamstress.

It can feel a bit daunting, but if you do your research and find a seamstress you click with, it all works great. My seamstress had good ideas and creative input and in the end I didn't need anyone else's opinion.

I work in the Bridal Fashion trade and my suggestion is to firstly make an appointment to go alone to a small (well recommended) store and try some styles to see how you actually feel. Most independents are extremely knowledgeable and DO NOT expect you to choose or buy on the first appointment. So DO NOT FEEL pressured. They would rather you made the right choice then have to deal with a Bride who felt pressurised/forced into buying as she will never feel happy. They want excited Brides who love everything about their dress rather than a Bride who is only 50% You will honestly know then if that is what you want (rather than a high street dress) and I wouldn't rule out taking DH if you want another view? Maybe once you have narrowed down to one or two? If its high street for you, like PP's say, maybe face time a good friend/family member ( but choose the person carefully - I have seen many well meaning comments actually causing more harm then good!).Personally, I think wear what you want, there is no right or wrong for any wedding big or small. Just wear what makes you feel confident with a touch of excitement!! And my DH saw my dress and we have been married 25 years xx

Well update:

I emailed two bridal shops, they are the closest at 1hr away. One independent, one chain. This was a week or so ago. No reply. Websites both say appointment only due to covid, so email for appointment

So no closer. Next big town is 2+hrs away. So I might just order online

That's a pain. Are they not answering their phones either?
Normandy144 · 07/03/2022 15:58

It's perfectly normal to go on your own. You sound really down about it. Don't be defeated, you don't need to resort to online just because you're having trouble getting an appointment. Call up the stores that you have emailed and speak to them directly. If they're not answering the phone then email them again - always worth checking you have the right email address and checking your spam in case their reply has got lost.

For what it's worth I shopped alone to get mine. I actually liked it as it meant I could get an idea of what worked and what didn't. Then when I was confident in the style I was looking for I took some friends and family with me.

If you go ETSY they have beautiful dresses...and many with fabulous feedback. My granddaughter bought one..absolutely beautiful. Just give them very detailed measurements. But the most important thing is FEEDBACK...

Congrats on your upcoming wedding. Cake

Honestly this is unusual. If you want to PM me, I 'might' know who they are or can recommend a good store in your area maybe?? Don't give up hope!!

@colderandeatsmincepiesalot - thank you, they are independent stores in the country I live in.

I now have an upcoming trip to uk soon for work, so have allocated some time to look in London. I actually saw a few online in monsoon and John Lewis which could work, not too pricey or fussy.
