So I need to get around to actually registering the marriage, im right in thinking it can be done up til 28 days before the wedding date aren't I?
Also is it the full birth certificate you need to take, so the part with parents details on ? Can this be ordered or do you just get the standard part?

Do you mean “giving notice”? For civil weddings in England and Wales, it has to be done at leat 29 days before the ceremony.

Not sure about the birth certificate, but if you were born on or after 1/1/83 you can bring your passport instead.

Lazypuppy · 01/02/2022 08:07

There is a huge backlog with registrars due to all the postponed weddings over the last 2 years, honestly get this booked in asap you need to ring for an appointment. Presume you have already provisionally booked your wedding slot with registrar for actual wedding, juwt need to give notice??

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 08:12

Yes just need to give notice everything else all booked in. Shit didn't realise I'll have to get it booked in! I was born 89' so I don't my birth certificate ? And think my partner has just scraped that too

Partner was born before 1983 so what docs does he need ? Is it just his birth cert? He holds a valid passport

See the link I posted above, it lists the documents.

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 08:56

Thank you @TeaStory it says 'a valid passport (or UK birth certificate if you were born before 1 January 1983)' does this mean one or the other ? So he can use either his passport OR birth certificate ?

I don’t know for sure - but the way I read it, he can only use his passport if he was born on or after 1st January 1983 but if he was born before that then he needs his birth certificate.

TeaStory · 01/02/2022 09:14

But I could be reading it wrong. I’d phone and ask if you can.

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 09:24

I've just rang up and confirmed and she said he can use his passport if it's valid. So that's fine. But then on the wedding app it's says this - Proof of identity
• A valid passport or you can prove your identity with the following:
• Birth Certificate
Please note: If you're born after 1983 and do not hold a valid UK passport, you will need your full birth certificate and your mother's birth certificate.

So the gov website says before 1983 and the wedding app (local council website) says after 1983 and mentions nothing about before. Honestly I'm so confused

TeaStory · 01/02/2022 09:28

Yes, they could have worded it a bit more clearly! Glad it’s getting sorted.

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 09:31

I hate the fact it's not worded clearly and makes you think wtf !! I'll argue the toss if I go and they want the birth certificate lol

You can order certified copies of birth certificates

weddingfun · 01/02/2022 09:34

@LIZS yeah i was going too but I'd need a next day one which costs £38! I'm not paying that if I don't need it. Future fil is looking for the birth certificate just incase
