@bobandhisburgers

We went to a quirky one in a railway museum. Great street food vans, great cocktail bar and great live jazz band playing modern song covers. Only downside was I got locked in the toilets.
Was that STEAM?

Oh and I've rarely stayed at the venue, so this doesn't impact on my enjoyment at all, in fact, in general, I haven't enjoyed those quite so much as they have tended to be the hotel weddings. There have been some exceptions though.

Things I don't like - being split up from people I know at the tables, not enough food, really expensive bar.

Massive teepee in a private camping field. People could camp the day before / the night after if wanted or could pay for mini teepees to be put up in advance (or local hotels for those who hate camping).

The teepee had wooden tables with cushions, help yourself to drinks (wine on all tables). Great music, fire pits, bean bags, free flip flops. Food was catered from a van and was excellent. Another van came round in the evening with fish and chips or bacon rolls.

Was perfect. Chilled and fun.

@brokenbiscuitsx no it's was East Anglian Railway Museum.

Chilled out barn wedding. Lots of alcohol before the food was served. And not just wine!! Cocktails and beer too, they went down a treat. The more you splurge on food and drink the happier people are I think. Don’t bother with things like favours as people don’t care about them, but an extra drink or more canapés will be very well received! Lots of seating in the evening too, worst wedding was in a pub but the upstairs and most of the seating was bar stools and taken, it was impossible to eat the evening meal and my feet and back were killing, ended up going downstairs for a drink just to sit down for half an hour.

Weddings that seat people with people they know and don’t split up families/friendship groups are the best!

Agreed! I went to one with no seating plan!

It sounds like chaos, but it was great. 3 really long tables and you could sit wherever and with whoever you wanted. Only assigned seats were the top table.

Ooo lots of great ideas , thank you!

Love love the idea of a giant teepee in the private field and guests can stay overnight.

Trying to think of some ideas were we can have some activities for the guests while photos are being taken etc

Live band definitely
Plenty of food and drink (maybe some money behind the bar if you can).
Not a too early start preferably 2pm onwards as otherwise it's a very long day!

Friend got married in a gorgeous little country church.... vicar had known family for decades and it was really personal and lovely. Followed by afternoon reception in the walled garden of a local hotel.... loads of nibbles going round, flowing drinks followed by a lovely relaxed reception. Weather was perfect, and there wasn't hours of bloody photos Grin

Activities? Nibbles and drinks is fine. Keep the photos to 30 mins ish. People don't want to do activities at a wedding. Lawn games would be fine.

I hestated to post because the couple in question broke up after 18 months but that was entirely due to things that happened after the wedding!

Very 'them'. They did everything they way they wanted to and knew would suit the majority of their family/friends. Very un snobby venue, very relaxed reception with fun speeches but only lasted 1o-15 minutes at most. The best thing was the reception venue had camping facilities and it was mostly family that camped. (we camp alot anyway as a big group - I know this would be some people's idea of hell). It was close to all of our homes so we were able to go the night before and pitch up then get ready at home and just rolled into our tents early hours of the morning then had a big communal breakfast and all hands on deck clearing up the reception room.

One thing I loved, very Pinterest esque but there was a big basket of pairs of flip flops by the dance floor - new and for you to keep once you'd worn them. Made teh dance floor all the more fun. The dessert cart was a big hit too and the caterers did a fab job of keeping it topped up all evening.
