Vow renewal

DH and I had to postpone twice last year, and in the end we just buggered off and got married on our own (it was brilliant).

Our parents are keen for us to do a vow renewal as they weren't part of our day. I'm not fussed either way but we still have money in the registry office we'd otherwise lose so why not 😂 it was only planned to be 22 people originally and this probably won't change.

All being well, we'll do it around our wedding anniversary and then a "reception" afterwards for all our friends (I'm guessing people will be gagging for a party by then too).

Does this sound shit? We won't expect presents from anyone, just for them to come for a knees up.

Also, would it be totally crap to run the renewal as an actual wedding, have my dad walk me into the room with music, flowers etc?

I will insist on a new dress though since the dry cleaner couldn't get the mud and red wine out if my original one 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sorry you've had no replies on this.

I think its a great idea though I don't know if i would make plans for this year personally.

I think most people will understand you missed out on the wedding "experience" & treat it like an actual wedding however I don't think i'd do the walking down the aisle & whatnot but meal, speeches etc. seem okay.

:)

My DF did this a few years ago, had a blessing and and a party afterwards. I think that the general consensus on MN is that blessings/vow renewals are just fir those who've had affairs but it was wasn't the case here and everyone had a really lovely day.

I'd do it but like the PP said, this year may be a little optimistic.

I think it sounds like a lovely idea, everyone will be glad of the chance to celebrate with you as they couldn’t the first time round.

I didn’t know you could do vow renewals at a registry office though? (Or have I misunderstood?)

MsTSwift · 26/01/2021 08:29

In your circumstances I would go for it! Life is short and your parents not here forever.

If you were married 10 years doing one I would assume one of you had cheated!

I think it’s a great idea and it would be lovely for your Dad to be able to have that moment.

New dress obviously required Wink but possibly avoid a full on wedding gown

Yes in any other situation it would be which one had the affair. However a lockdown wedding followed by a we are free again to celebrate party would be great. Do it how YOU want to do it though and not to suit other people or their expectations.

A friend of mine did this - married at a registry office and then had a big wedding a little over a year later. It was pretty much indistinguishable from a 'real' wedding. A few distant relatives didn't realise that it wasn't their official wedding until they were told at the reception.

bettertimesarecomingnow · 26/01/2021 10:25

I think that sounds lovely, and yes, get your dad walking you down the aisle!

We were thinking of doing similar as our wedding on 1st May seems unlikely now... so wondered about registry office then and proper wedding in July

I think this would be a lovely thing to do and something for you and your family to look forward to. Agree with pp, do it how you and DH would like it.

londongirl12 · 26/01/2021 10:31

We've been to one before where they got married abroad but then party here. It felt just like a wedding.

RaininSummer · 26/01/2021 10:37

Normally I find the idea of vowel renewals very try hard and maybe a sign of marital problems but not in the current climate where families and friends have missed out on the wedding. Do it and have a lovely time, once we are allowed.

Ratchet101 · 26/01/2021 12:47

Tbh, I think there will a lot of these in the upcoming years. I always associated it with anyone who got married abroad or wanted the personal touch of a close friend of family to do the ceremony...honestly I think in 2022/23 onwards they'll be so many wedding vow renewals. It'll be interesting to see how people will do it mind (I.e, the big dress, speeches etc)
