To think we can plan a wedding in 5-6 months?

Hi.

We’ve got a wedding venue viewing on Sunday with the hope to book for mid week at the back end of March.

Is it sheer madness to think we could plan a wedding in that timespan with the current shituation? 😬

Thanks.

I did it. Why wouldn’t you be able to?

PurBal · 06/10/2020 11:40

No. We did it, though admittedly outside of COVID. There have been a lot of postponed weddings though so you may find venues tricky. Churches tend to have more availability than registry offices and civil venues. If we're still on maximum numbers of 15 in March you could book a private room in a pub or restaurant.

My first wedding 22 years ago was arranged and planned in 6 months. Definitely do-able.

I’m slightly worried that with rearrangements, getting suppliers & whatnot will be a nightmare. I’m not overly fussy with all the decoration but we’ve said we want a proper photographer.

Ours took about an hour to plan and book, but we did just book a holiday to Vegas then go onto the Little Chapel of Flowers website and use the drop downs to book the wedding so it was an easy task.

I think it's doable as long as you get things like dress, venue and cake done early on as they need the longer lead time for booking.

I would also be realistic about where we might be 'lockdown' wise and size your wedding accordingly, March is still winter/early spring, it's likely that very small weddings with limited physical contact will still be the norm.

InTheLongGrass · 06/10/2020 11:50

Many moons ago, we did exactly that. Engaged in September, married in March.
Dont know how the current situation would affect things. Keep away from Mothers day weekend for florists.
My dress was from Debenhams, so no long wait time there. Nothing else really has a long lead time I dont think?

Congratulations!

InTheLongGrass · 06/10/2020 11:52

Oh, cross posts about lead times! Cake was M&S. Looks like you might have venue sorted.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 06/10/2020 11:53

I planned my wedding in 5 months... however there was no Covid then.

I also didn’t have a “wedding dress” dress, I had lovely a white dress from a normal shop. I think a lot of wedding dress shops have a long lead-time.

I think the problem you might face is a lot of businesses will be booked up with weddings that have been postponed from this year.

But if you have your venue and they can cater, then it should be fine. Best of luck x

LividLaughLovely · 06/10/2020 11:57

I did it in nine weeks, admittedly this time last year.

Weddings don’t need to take two years to plan. What would you do if you were planning any other big party? You wouldn’t let it consume your life.

NancyBotwinBloom · 06/10/2020 11:58

What can the venue provide?

What's left to sort out after that?

AgnesNaismith · 06/10/2020 12:00

I’ve never understood what takes so long to plan weddings.

We’d decided everything and booked it all in a week. Spent the next year twiddling my thumbs.

movingonup20 · 06/10/2020 12:00

I booked mine 7 weeks beforehand. No covid of course, many moons ago but as long as you have realistic expectations there's no problem.

You need to check cancellation policies on everything, remember insurance will probably exclude Covid, and realise that social distancing measures are likely to still be in place. Dresses sometimes can be an issue due to long lead times so that's the one thing that you would need to sort quickly if you aren't a common size

Saisong · 06/10/2020 12:00

I booked our venue in February for a date at the end of May (cancellation), so 3 months. It was fine, though a very easy going event, mostly outdoors and bbq style.

movingonup20 · 06/10/2020 12:04

I had a friends son do photos, friend of my mothers baked the cake, customer of my dads new jag, off the peg bridesmaid dress and end of line wedding dress with minor alterations.

Brandaris · 06/10/2020 12:05

You can do it in 5 months, I’m a bridal seamstress and I have known brides manage it in much less than that.

Things to consider- many wedding dresses have long lead times, but some designers have stock available which you can get quickly, or you can buy a sample sale dress which might need a bit more work to make fit perfectly but is just as lovely. Beware shops that have lots of cheap, ‘new’ dresses available to buy on the spot, they’re likely to actually be dresses that several people have tried on and not new at all, and be made with cheap fabrics and construction.

I’m seeing a number of brides who were planning to get married in spring reschedule to 2022 already. Unless you’re happy with very few people attending and having no reception/lots of restrictions I personally wouldn’t choose to get married early next spring.

2021 has not only the brides who originally booked that year but also lots of rescheduled 2020 brides so you may find it difficult to get the suppliers you hope for. You might be absolutely fine, but worth contacting a few to check availability before you commit!

Planned my wedding in 2019 in 6 weeks! Was a small affair with 25 guests so I think 5 months for something bigger is fine
