Alterations timing?

I got my dress today! I’m so happy with it Smile it fits perfectly but I’d really like to lose some weight. I get married in 6 months and the lady in the shop said I need to get fitted for alterations 8 weeks before the wedding. That only leaves me 4 months to lose weight. Had this been everyone else’s experience or did anyone manage to get alterations done later on?

I'm having my alterations done 6 weeks before by the same shop where I bought my dress she said this would be plenty of time. It was a sample sale dress it needs shortening and taking in around the bust. I'm also hoping to lose a bit of weight before my fitting. It might just depend on how busy the shop is, perhaps the seamstress leaves 8 weeks knowing she has a week or to to play with incase of emergency or anything.

Mine is a sample too, the shop have recommended a seamstress, it’s not in-house so think I’ll just ask around at others.

Good idea OP to shop around, how many weeks before your wedding do you want your fitting? When is your wedding? Perhaps if your wedding if not is in the summer, when the seamstress might be busier you might have more scope to leave it a bit longer.

The wedding is early September, I wouldn’t mind a fitting around 4 weeks before but I’d rather not do 8. It will mean I have to stop losing weight to stop it being too big. But yes, it will be summer time so probably a lot busy.

I think I had a fitting about 4 weeks before and a final fit 2 weeks before. I lost nearly 2 stone over the months before and my dress had to be taken in by several inches on every seam. It was a lot of work and my weight and shape still fluctuated in the weeks before. It did occasionally drown me on my wedding day.
My learnings?! Lose as much as you can early and ideally settle in the weeks before. A wedding dress makes you look and feel amazing regardless of how fat or big you still feel you are. You will shine through and look beautiful in a dress that fits which does mean stopping losing weight at a point where you can get your dress properly fitted.
A properly fitting dress is worth more than an extra few pounds.

Ah mine is September too. I'm going end of July, so i want to lose my weight by then and then just maintain. So whatever I am in July thats what I'll be. That's still 4 months away. Agree with above poster you will feel amazing in your dress no matter what size you are.

I do feel good in it already, it’s corseted so looks a nice shape too. But I need to lose weight anyway so the wedding is the kick I needed. I will try to aim to get a fitting 4 weeks before and just maintain whatever weight I am then.
@glitterbugsparkles well done on your 2 stone! You must have worked hard.
