How many carats is your engagement ring?

I’m looking for a halo engagement ring and had in in my head I wanted at least a carat but most of the ones in our price range are less than 0.75.

Anyone mind telling me how many carats theirs is and would it be really nosey to ask how much it cost?

I’m not sure how much we should be expecting to spend and what we should expect to get for it.

Have you been to see the in real life or have you been looking online? I got mine from Chisholm Hunter, I had saw it on their website and instantly dismissed it because I didn't like it. Then when I saw it in real life I thought, that's the one. It's so sparkly. The one I thought I was wanted from Laings didn't impress me when I saw it.

Keepmewarm · 28/12/2019 20:06

No idea. It belonged to my late mother in law. It’s stunning and has so much meaning.

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain I wasn't specifically aiming my comment at you. Your ring is gorgeous btw. Very chic and timeless.

Wow GlamGiraffe! I’d definitely feel nervous wearing it.

Have looked in the Argyll Arcade a few times and am always drawn to the same rings but haven’t tried any on yet as we’ve never (and still aren’t) in the position to buy yet and I can’t deal with the pushy sales tactics! Hopefully the style I love suits me though.

@DixieLandReject I really love that!

Also OP as a follow up for those who have suggested second hand/vintage it might be an idea to have a stone or stones reset if you find a nice stone in a vintage shop but don't like the setting. I say this as I inherited a few diamond rings but the settings are quite clunky in comparison to today's settings. I'm going to have them reset and from my initial research it doesn't seem too expensive.

I'd definitely recommend looking in pawn brokers. I've discovered you find amazing jewellery at tiny costs, really good quality nice things, you need to work out which are the good shops as not all of them are and then keep revisiting, some sell their ex pledge stuff off and some sell secondhand jewelry but if you keep looking you will find something and the bonus is the prices, sometimes they will do you a discount too so always ask. I'd scout around all your local pawnbrokers and see which sell good jewellery as opposed to the odd pair of gold or silver earrings and keep them on your radar.

Mine is 0.25! It's a cluster ring on 18ct white gold. Didn't care about carats it's just loved the ring. It cost £800 in 2008. Still love it.

My eternity ring was £2200 and is 1 carat over five stones. Again loved it but the claws are sharp so I don't worry it much.

Mine is similar to the Anna ring you like, but square (cushion cut) shaped. The main diamond in mine is about 0.44 I think. But people tend to think the diamond is bigger because of the way it’s set. Plus it’s D coloured, which is the best colour you can get, a very good cut and clarity.
It cost £2400 in a shop in Hatton Garden.
You definitely need to try them on, as the kind of ring I originally wanted didn’t look right on my finger!

Mine is 0.75ct with a 0.2 halo (so nearly 1 in total!). Obviously you would want a platinum band but this was D colour, top clarity and cut so couldn’t have done any better.

Was £3k from Birmingham jewellery quarter not long ago! Insured for £5.5k.

I would say definitely don’t buy high street- a similar ring in our local high street jeweller was £8.5k!!!! It was 0.8ct I think but nowhere near as good quality. We were so glad we made the trip, it was totally worth a day’s travel to get the same ring for £5k cheaper!

Thanks again for everyone’s replies!

I’m back with another (possibly daft) question.

I’ve ordered a ring sized and I’m a Q!!!!!! Is that fucking enormous?!

That is absolutely STUNNING @user1471548941

Friend of mine is a diamond dealer. He’s in the know

He says many people spend a fortune on a perfect stone with no inclusions. When in reality. Unless your a jewellery designer or know your diamonds. Most to the naked eye you can’t even see

He always says. Don’t go for the best diamond. Go for one slightly down on the scale. Your paying over the odds for a diamond that to the naked eye looms exactly the same.

I remember he once showed me a diamond which was included with a black spot. He then showed me the same cut and size diamond that was about £30,000 more.

I couldn’t even tell the difference. When we looked under the glass. I could see. But not without very strong lights etc.

Mrshue · 11/01/2020 13:40

Also. The more facets it had. . The more it sparkles. Hence why an emerald shaped diamond isn’t always incredibly sparkly.

kazza446 · 11/01/2020 13:43

Mine is about 0.5 carat in platinum. It’s a good quality diamond and was designed by husband and made to his design. It cost just short of £1000. We’ve been married 13 years and I still haven’t told him how much I hate it . I keep hoping he may buy me an eternity ring but it’s not yet happened!! I thought about accidentally losing it but I couldn’t do it!! 😩😩

Mrshue · 11/01/2020 13:43

You can also get lab grown diamonds
Some looking fucking unreal. Plus no blood was spilt making it.

Blueuggboots · 11/01/2020 13:56

Please do not go to a high street jeweller.
I'd recommend going to the jewellery quarter or speaking to a diamond merchant (we used quality diamonds and they were brilliant!).
You'll get more for your money.

Concestor · 11/01/2020 13:57

I have 3 stones which total 1 carat between them and I think it cost 2k but this was in Birmingham jewellery quarter in 2007.

Concestor · 11/01/2020 13:58

Oh and it's set in platinum.

Blueuggboots · 11/01/2020 13:58

If you go on the loose diamonds section of quality diamonds, they grade their diamonds out of 10 for cut, clarity etc. Really helped me choose a great cushion cut diamond I love!
don't work for them I promise!!

tinselvestsparklepants · 11/01/2020 15:03

I have no idea about carat etc but what I do know is that it's small, simple, and I LOVE it. It's the right size and shape for my hand and I'll never grow tired of it. It's a second hand one and dh and I chose it together. Goes nicely with a very simple wedding band.

mouldygrapes · 13/01/2020 22:39

Mine is 1.5 carat but it’s a sapphire, not a diamond. We got it in Hatton Garden and chose the stone first then the mount.

Re ring sizes - no it’s not enormous but be sure you’re measuring right! Initially the first jeweller said I was Q. The place we got this one correctly sized me as an N which I initially thought was too tight. We tried loads of bands and they showed me how it needs to be snug but not tight. In the finished ring, N is perfect. Q would have been way too loose!

Bellemom · 02/05/2022 15:32

My is only 0.4 ct. I knew nth about diamond rings at that time (26 yrs old). I loved it then but find it too small now (20+ yrs later). I am now looking for a 1.5 ct!😄

Misunderstoodagain · 03/05/2022 14:37

Mines 1.3ct with another .6 on sides. About 6k. More money was spent on colour/clarity and cut and it SPARKLES! I could of got a bigger diamond with less clarity etc but then it wouldn't look as nice

Strongly suggest looking into lab diamonds if you want something more substantial, impossible to tell tge difference

TizerorFizz · 03/05/2022 14:49

1ct even with some smaller stones isn’t worth £26k! I can assure you, from recent experience, your insurers will not give you that.

I think second hand is better value. However the price of diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires has absolutely rocketed. It’s insane right now. I have a very nice jewellery collection and I am stunned at how much my jewellery is now worth. I have a 6ct emerald cut diamond and it’s not worth 6x£26,000 plus because it’s a decent stone. However it’s gone up by at least a multiple of 7 since I was given it. Like certain handbags - not a bad investment. I get nervous wearing it now!
