No official photographer, should we use Dropbox?

Hi,
We don’t want an official photographer at our wedding, it’s quite low key.
At a wedding we went to recently they asked people to add their pictures to Dropbox, and went on to make a beautiful book.
I am sooooo non techy, what I’d like advice on is
Is Dropbox my best bet?
If yes how does it work?
I just got the app and think I need to use the business package so all our guests can add to it. Or have I completely got the wrong end of the stick?
Is there a similar but free app?

Thanks so much.

Dropbox is free but it has a storage limit so you can use without upgrading to business (you just invite users to access your folders by email) but you'd need to move the pictures somewhere else as they come.

You could have people upload to their own Dropbox and share the folder with you so you'd see all of the folders in your own Dropbox but each folder would be using each person's own storage limit, it's a tiny bit more work for guests but it means you aren't limited in terms of space.

If you are using the desktop app the easiest way is to choose "New shared folder" on the right, name it and type people's email addresses in to share with them, they will then be emailed access to the folder which they can drag and drop files to. If they don't have Dropbox they will be invited to join for free. Like I said though, there's a storage limit so it would be more sensible to have each guest make their own folder and share it with you. If you don't want to get them to do this then you will need business to upgrade the limit.

You could also do much the same thing with Google Drive, anyone that has a gmail email address will have this for free and can share folders with you in the same manner but again the storage limits could be problematic unless each guest uses their own account.

Another option would be to create a closed Facebook group and have people upload albums there so anyone not in the group won't see them. Facebook doesn't really have limitations so it's an easy option that most people can access.

There are alternatives to Dropbox out there but mostly they will come with a cost, it's the storage limits that are the real issue.

Cloudup looks ok (I haven't used it but heard good things), the limit for free is 1,000 items so may work for you depending on how click happy your guests get - cloudup.com/

You should have enough room in a free Dropbox account. If you're worried, ask your partner to set up one too!

ShartGoblin
Thanks so much.
So If I had a blackboard at my reception, how would I word it so the guests knew what to do?

And if it’s went down the fb group route, would I be able to retrieve and print the pics?

@ShartGoblin I’m so sorry to ask but I’m having huge trouble setting up Dropbox. I’ve got an account, and have named a file, but I can’t see how to let other people put their photos in it.
I went to Dropbox help which told me to click Request Files after signing in, but that doesn’t come up as an option.
Have you any ideas?

Are you using the phone app or the desktop version? At work atm and need to go to a meeting but if you let me know which you're using I'll take some screenshots when I finish and upload them. Pictures are better than my rambling generally Grin

I really appreciate that.
I have an oldish iPhone and an old laptop, so I thought my phone might be better.

Argh, sorry been super busy! I don't have an iphone so I'm not sure the apps are the same but I'm assuming they are similar enough. Go to where your folder is (it just appears on mine when I load Dropbox up as a recent folder)

  • hit the 3 dots to the right
  • select share
  • type the email addresses you want to share the folder with

and that's all you need to do, they will get emailed an invite to sign up, once they have they can just drag files in. Use the email option not the link because the link will only give them read only access.
