Selling wedding dress?

I am thinking of selling my wedding dress. It's currently in its bag at my parents house, regrettably still dirty from my wedding in October. I haven't a clue what to do with it... and can't part with the c£200 needed to have it professionally cleaned! Before I do, I want to work out what to do with it. in my eyes it's served it's purpose, looked incredible on the day and it's in all of the photos, so I want to sell it, and use the proceeds to buy a piece of jewellery I will wear for ever.

It was an expensive dress from a popular designer, bought for £3K.

Does anyone know the resell value of a designer wedding dress, any agencies or websites they would recommend? Advice much appreciated.

What size/style is it?

luberrly · 11/03/2019 22:18

Its Anna Campbell ‘Adele’ size small (I’m a 10/12 - sizing is generous) and I’m 5 ft 8, although may need a few cm taken off the skirt if it’s untidy after cleaning.

Sorry no answer to the actual question, but I took mine to the dry cleaner at morrisons (timspons?) and it was £75 to get it cleaned!

Find a good dry cleaner and ask the question if it's worth saving and how much it'll be to clean it. Only then will you know what you want to do with the dress.

I think that sadly you'll lose an awful lot of money selling it on. That's why so many brides donate their wedding dresses, because for the measly amount they'd get back for it, they'd rather just give it to someone in need.

It is really hard to sell even the most stunning of wedding dresses. There are loads of places that seek them but if they do sell you lose a lot of money. It’s optimistic thinking you’d get enough for a piece of jewellery to keep I’m afraid.
People willing to spend the kind of money I think you’d want will buy new those that can’t afford it will buy from China or on the High Street.
More often than not dresses don’t sell at all even for peanuts.

The longer you leave it dirty the less likely it will get clean .. I'm an ex dry cleaner so know quite a lot about wedding dresses . If you are able to post the label in the back I can give more advice .. only the very high end dresses are made of silk and most are polysatin( read polyester ) which washes up beautifully . It's a very robust fabric and can get treated quite roughly and still survive . Remember though those these dresses are more costumes that are designed to last 24 hours and serve a purpose . It's hard to find someone who is your size as they are 99% of the time adjusted to fit your shape exactly . Of course it can be taken in but it needs to be someone thinner than you .. there are agencies out there but they will take a cut .. you will be able to sell if if it's clean and perfect again but won't get much for it in my experience .

You need to sell asap as brides want a bargain....so a dress still sold in the shops is more likely to sell. (Think girl in bridal shop, tries on dress, goes home to check if she can buy cheaper on eBay). If it's last season you won't get much at all for it. A bridal agency is your best bet.

babysharkah · 12/03/2019 17:43

I donated mine. I tried to sell it but there was no interest and it was taking up too much space in the house! I don't know if there's that much of a market in second hand dresses tbh.

footballcrazy11 · 14/03/2019 15:24

Wow its a stunning dress!

Shitonthebloodything · 14/03/2019 18:40

If it's any help I'm looking for a 2nd hand dress as I'm on a budget (we are eloping so no big fuss) and wouldn't want to pay more than £250. From posts I've seen my budget seems average for a pre loved shopper. A dress like yours could cost up to that in alterations alone. I've seen dresses on pre loved sites going unsold for years (spotted my friend on there in her dress from almost 10 years ago!!) And they can discolour over time so I'd list on eBay now and be prepared to drop your price quite significantly monthly/weekly until it sells. I suspect you'll get lots of watchers waiting for the price to drop into their budget.

Justonedayatatime11 · 14/03/2019 18:53

Honestly, don't bother. I put my Pronovias dress up for sale for less than 20% of what I paid for it and nothing, no interest whatsoever. And that was a 2018 design.

footballcrazy11 · 15/03/2019 13:29

Maybe we should start a "buy my dress" thread as previous poster said she will buy 2nd hand and so will I. There might be lots of others interested, just a thought?

Justonedayatatime11 · 15/03/2019 13:51

football I'd be up for that

footballcrazy11 · 16/03/2019 10:45

Justone start it up then maybe Mumsnet will keep it near the top?

boredboredboredboredbored · 29/03/2019 16:39

Still white is geared at selling wedding dresses. Or you could try eBay, I think you'll sell it for a decent price.

grincheux · 29/03/2019 16:46

@football that's a great idea!

Lost5stone · 29/03/2019 17:01

Oh OP that dress is beautiful and we are the same height and size....

Shame I'm not engaged! Maybe DP could be convinced.... 😂
