DIY Veil

Has anyone made their own veil?

I had a look quickly on google and it seems straightforward....

I have no experience of making a veil but do sew, ease will be very dependent on style.

If you use a very delicate fabric and want something long with a train then you will need to do a very very fine rolled hem on LOADs of fabric which is fiddly, time consuming and delicate work.

gigi556 · 04/03/2019 08:51

Would it look bad to just have a blunt cut rather than a rolled hem?

You don't need to do a hem on tulle as long as you cut it cleanly (use a rotary cutter, not scissors as they will leave scraggy ends).

My mum made my veil, and the veil bit was incredibly easy to do. She then sewed on handmade silk lace, so that bit had taken a very long time to make, but buying trim would be easy

Is this to save money? If it is, then look on JJ's house. Veils are so reasonable! I've bought my chapel veil for £17!!!

If it's because you like to make things, I get that too Smile

gigi556 · 05/03/2019 10:13

@blueskiespls It is to save money. I had a look on JJs house, but I was kind of apprehensive about ordering something from them as their reputation is a bit mixed. My dress is a pronovias and wasn't cheap and I want to do the dress justice if that makes sense? I don't want the veil to make the dress look cheap. The only reason I have an expensive wedding dress is because I didn't pay for it. Things are really tight for us financially.

I do enjoy making things though so could be a good project... I had considered that I could buy an inexpensive plain one and embellish it.

I've ordered some tulle and embellishment samples from a bridal fabric website recommended by a friend who makes wedding dresses.

Ok I totally get that!! I have ordered mine, as it was so plain i honestly thought how bad can it be. Read the reviews etc... my dress is so beautiful, all lace with train. So I just wanted a plain veil. And as it is a long one, I expect I will take it off in the evening and my girls will be taking turns in wearing it ...

blueskiespls · 05/03/2019 11:22

@gigi556 and next time you are at primark, they often do loads of hair things. You can probably get a comb there to attach the tulle to. It is nice making things! I have to adjust 3 small flower girl dresses

gigi556 · 05/03/2019 12:01

@blueskiespls I'm returning something to primary this afternoon so I'll have a look!

So the veil hasn't arrived yet then? I'd be curious to know what you think when it does. How long does the shipping take?

I'm getting married in 6 weeks so I don't have a lot of time to get everything together!

I ordered mine off Etsy. It was £60 plus £16 customs fee as it came from Utah big a similar on in a UK bridal shop would have been around £200.

(Two tier chapel length with ribbon edge)

blueskiespls · 05/03/2019 12:12

@gigi556 I didn't pay for express delivery so won't arrive for another week or so. All the reviews were good and it's such a basic veil. I am hoping for best! They did have express delivery if you want something quick

I would try to get a veil second hand, or better still, see if you can borrow one from a married friend.

So many women (including me) just buy one new from the dress shop for upwards of £100 and it is a bit of a rip off really, but not something you really want to scrimp on if you want to do the dress justice.

I've offered to lend my veil to my best friend and SIL who are both getting married this year if they want it and it goes with their dress. It would be nice for it to get some more use.

gigi556 · 08/03/2019 16:08

I've bought some tulle and I'm going to give it a go!

I'm interested in trying this! Please post pics when it's done!

gigi556 · 15/03/2019 06:58

Ok, so it's technically easy to do but the veil I made didn't look great... I'm going to try again in a different style. I didn't try any on with my dress in the shop. Big mistake. I need a rethink.

Shookethtothecore · 15/03/2019 07:04

I paid £100 for my veil and just to add it was such a waste of money and I really wish I had done this or bought second hand, good luck

FusionChefGeoff · 15/03/2019 07:08

You can borrow mine?? It's standard length and edged with something sparkly I think!

Languishing in a box on the wardrobe at the moment and I'll happily post it out to you if you could return it after - pm me if you want...

blueskiespls · 15/03/2019 10:00

@gigi556 just for your info, I have received my £17 veil now! Do you want pics? It's perfectly fine for me, plain, good quality tulle with a gin edge

kshaw · 15/03/2019 10:08

I'm making my own and spent ages researching fabrics. I've bought some 'soft English net' from Etsy as couldn't find another UK seller. It's sooo soft and not like stuff tulle. I used seller SuperLuxeFabrics and was cheap. Much cheaper than silk tulle
Not made it yet but looks easy enough!

gigi556 · 15/03/2019 22:48

@blueskiespls Would love to see pics. I'm curious!

@FusionChefGeoff Lovely of you to offer but I think I'm going to stick with making one :)
