Wedding dress in 11 weeks?!!

Right, my sister tried on her Maggie Sotterro dress this weekend. It’s too short, she’ll need to wear flats for it to look ok. The lace sleeves are slightly short.

Manager has now checked and confirms that the dress is too short, he claims the correct length was ordered but the wrong size sent. Says the dress is now discontinued and can’t be reordered.

He’s offered her a refund but says as she’s a size 6 she won’t get another dress in time & will struggle to buy off the peg and have it altered. Is he telling the truth?

It’s been a total and complete fucking nightmare trying to get her a dress. She has some stupid idea in her head which she can’t describe. So she’s not even 70% happy with the dress anyway.

Any advice about what she should do?

If she doesn't want anything super fancy, could she get a bridesmaid dress? I got married in a BM dress, which you buy off the peg, but then I didn't want a weddingy wedding dress. There are zillions of styles, so if she's happy with something simple that would do. Or call round lots of wedding shops asking if they have a size 8 in stock and take it to a good tailor/adjuster rather than using the shop/dress supplier adjustment service. They'll be able to turn it round fast.

If there's a wed2b or David's bridal store near you they do dresses you can take home the same day and lots of sizes to try on. If she gets it soon then a seamstress should be able to do basic alterations like taking it in etc in 11 weeks but she needs to move quick! If she's not happy with the dress anyway she may as well take a refund!

She originally was looking at prom dresses and bridal dresses, so I’ve no idea how she ended up with a Maggie Sotterro! I think the ultimate problem is that she could look for the next 5 years and still not find a dress. It’s just bloody exhausting and I’ve had enough listening to her dress woes - if she’d upped her budget to £1200 9 months ago we’d probably not be at this stage.., grr

I’ll look and see if there are either of those stores near her - thanks!

I think she's find a size 8 buy in bridal shops and have altered smaller perhaps a 10. A good seamstress will sort it out!

Also high street bridal, as you buy off the rack.My friend had a needle and thread dress and another had a ghost one both available in selfridges/John Lewis

I had my wedding dress taken up in less than a week but it was over the quiet Christmas period, and it didn’t need any complicated alterations. I reckon if she buys it soon she could get someone to do it, though she might have to pay extra for a rush job.

Wed2b! Their dresses are lovely

MotorcycleMayhem · 20/02/2019 08:19

Wed2B or sample sales.

stillworkingitout · 20/02/2019 08:19

I had a high street dress for my wedding - we’d been engaged forever and then once we started looking at venues decided we wanted to do it now so had an 8-10 week lead in. My dress was lovely, it looked amazing, but I did go into the shopping experience with an open mind, knowing that being short on time would limit choice. It did need to be altered (shortened) but that was totally fine in the timescale.

MotorcycleMayhem · 20/02/2019 08:20

My alterations of my Wed2B dress took 2 weeks.

Monsoon bridal

JJs House do lots of designs, very quick turnaround (about 3 weeks), and both me and my friend were very happy with our dresses - fitted perfectly.

Have a look at needle&thread

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 20/02/2019 18:01

There are thousands and thousands of wedding dresses out there. I found one ( sample 2 years old) on sale in the local bridal shop. It was the wrong size so needed the £300 all inclusive alteration service.
I looked it up on eBay and bought it from a bridal shop in the States. Even with extortionate duty charges it came in £200 less than the local shop without alteration ( and it needed none).
Her exact one will be out there somewhere I bet.

She can defo buy a wed2b in a six and walk out with it same day, take her to your nearest wed2b today and browse the size 6 aisle, see what you find- you can return the short dress once you have a new one!

MrsAmaretto · 27/02/2019 23:39

Thanks everyone, well she went looking and found one she liked that was a sample in a bridal shop. It was a size 10 but they could alter it. Funnily enough when she went back to her original dress shop he can now get a replacement in the right size! So she’s going to stick to that.

Many thanks for your help, she literally tried on 100 + dresses, inc high street like monsoon, ghost, ted baker etc!

Hi mrsamaretto , not at all she can go and buy an ‘off the peg’ size 8 and go to a local seamstress and have it done within 2 weeks. I had mine off the peg last minute and had to do the same thing. He is right in the respect of if she were to buy a brand new one but not if she gets one off the peg . Hope this helps
