Sweet table/cart/display yes or no?

Show of hands please! Yes or No?

Mother really wants a sweet table of some sort at the wedding, thinks having old school sweets and little nibbles were a real hit at one she went to last year.

Personally I see it as unnecessary and also (this is no offence to those who have had them) I'm just not a fan of how they look at the moment. But if someone can post a pic of one that looks like it could sit in a fancy hotel I may be persuaded.

Not worth the messing about in my opinion! Just more expenditure and mess/wastage to be dealt with.

DappledThings · 06/01/2019 07:56

Totally been done and passe if you ask me. Also seen a very young bridesmaid go bonkers at it and then vomit on the dancefloor so I wouldn't!

Jackshouse · 06/01/2019 08:00

No. unnecessary and no one wants to eat sweets after they have been drinking.

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 06/01/2019 08:04

No horrible. No one wants sweets.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 06/01/2019 08:06

I've only seen it IRL at one wedding. It was a hit with the kids and there were quite a lot of kids at this wedding. It was before I had my own and quite honestly I wouldn't want mine just helping themselves to sweets all day now as they would not be able to control themselves around it. The adults were not eating the sweets really and the older generation could not see the point of it.

At the same wedding they did have a table where you could help yourself to cocktails and that was brilliant. They had 3 signature ones and there were lots of glasses of them that were being put out.

Mayra1367 · 06/01/2019 08:17

No , just adding unnecessary expense and would not want to share a room with a load of hyper children.

MoHunter · 06/01/2019 08:19

We’re having a cart but I decided against sweets as I don’t think many people other than children (and my H2B lol) will want to eat them.
Instead we’re having cheese, pates, pork pies, crackers/bread, chutneys, fruit, as well as Krispy Kreme donuts and Ferrero Rochers on ours.
The venue only provides pulled pork rolls in the evening so we wanted to have other nibbles available.

HugoBearsMummy · 06/01/2019 08:31

Going against the grain and sea of 'no's' but we had a beautiful one at our venue, decorated really tastefully to match our theme/colours, we got married at a Manor House and it didn't look out of place. It was a complete hit with guests, 95% of sweets gone by the end of the night (we had no children except our son who was page boy and our best friends little girl who was flower girl)

Bluelonerose · 06/01/2019 08:34

If you do please provide other food too.
I went to one wedding where all the evening food was was a sweet cart.

There were ALOT of guests in the local maccys afterwards.

JustBecauseYouAreUniqueDoesNot · 06/01/2019 08:35

No

Aridane · 06/01/2019 08:43

Sounds fun (she says in the minority). We have them at our works Christmas party and they go,down a treat

7kyay · 06/01/2019 08:49

If you're not convinced, don't have one. It's not the kind of thing that's missed at a wedding

flamingofridays · 06/01/2019 08:54

Were going to have sweets in jars somewhere with little bags to take in the evening but thats sort of instead of favours. Were actually only having 2 kids but we like sweets so..

flamingofridays · 06/01/2019 08:55

Must add were not hiring an extortionate sweet cart. Just going to buy some nice jars and go to costco or whatever.

BaaBaaBaaMoo · 06/01/2019 08:57

A friend had a lovely bicycle icecream cart outside the church. Went down a treat on a warm summers day.

ExplodingCarrots · 06/01/2019 09:08

We made our own sweet table and nearly everything was eaten and we had loads of positive feedback, especially from older generation with the old fashioned sweets. The kids were helping themselves all day too. And before anyone says , yes, there was plenty of food on offer and guests were not starving.

Somersetlady · 06/01/2019 09:16

A bit naff imo

MeOldChina · 06/01/2019 09:18

We had one a few years ago- I had borrowed the stamd and got the sweets from the wholesalers so it was quite inexpensive and it did go down really well. It wasn't in a fancy hotel though, it was more of a rustic feel.

CaMePlaitPas · 06/01/2019 09:24

No, it's so done.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 06/01/2019 09:28

MoHunter I love the idea of a cheese and crackers cart! I hate sweets so the sweet cart wouldn't appeal to me anyway.

WhereIsMyMug · 06/01/2019 10:12

Personally I wouldn't. It's a bit dated now and really it's just a table of cheap pick and mix with twee messages on. I'd lump it together with photo booths. I'd put the money towards better quality food or behind the bar etc.

sirmione16 · 06/01/2019 23:55

Thanks so much for all replies!!

  1. Kids vomiting really does ruin the scene for me a little unsurprisingly! Grin
  1. We'll be having a full 3 course meal for day guests, plus cake sliced and laid out, plus pork rolls (and veggie option) late evening PLUS fire pits with marshmallows on sticks for people to help themselves to... so I really don't think people need more food or could complain they haven't had enough...
  1. Cocktail bar sounds a better alternative!!! And with a nod to Italy, I could theme them all Italian spirit based (aperol spritz, Bellini, Hugo etc...) more ideas welcome!

We are doing our own version of a sweet table. Our wedding is very very low budget (less than £1500 all in) and there's no way I was forking out £200 on hiring one. My sister has got some coloured tin buckets from ebay, with matching scoops, and we are buying bulk sweeties from Costco or somewhere similar.

CalmDownPacino · 07/01/2019 13:23

I know they are considered a bit naff these days but there aren't many kids coming to ours, and I thought it'd be a bit of fun for the few that are.

SkeletonSkins · 07/01/2019 14:08

We’re just doing a kind of dessert buffet table instead with a few cheesecakes etc.
