Rings

I do not have an engagement ring and originally were not going to have a wedding ring. Mr HMP2b won't wear a ring due to his job. Fair enough. However, after I changed my mind and decided I wanted one he bought me the most gorgeous 3/4 eternity ring which is being delivered next week.

I still do not want him to give me a ring during the ceremony. Would it be wrong of me to wear it now? In my mind it still represents the same thing.

Not at all. Do what you feel happy with.

When's the wedding? Congratulations!

Cliveybaby · 30/04/2018 14:47

Nah... do whatever you want.
Apparently historically only the woman wore a ring as it was a "sign of ownership" kind of thing... that's what our (female) vicar told me!

Don’t you need a ring for the ceremony? The symbolic giving of rings is part of the vows isn’t it?

DH and I didn't want rings, I don't wear jewelry and DH knew he wouldn't wear one if he had it. So we didn't have ring exchange in our service...it really didn't matter. I wasn't bothered about having an engagement ring, but DH bought me a carved wood ring, which I wear occasionally and wore on our wedding day.

@KirstenRaymonde it's optional (in CofE anyway) One of you can have a ring, or both or neither.

Helpmeplan · 30/04/2018 15:26

Kirsten. It is not part of a legal ceremony. We've been together 24 years and having an extremely small wedding (9 including us) in a local registry office.

Anne. Wedding is October next year. We were waiting for a specific date because it is the date that we originally got together (at 17 & 20). Dp is an old romantic really.

We could leave it out if we wanted but I wanted rings just as I like the part of our vows that said the Ancient Egyptians believed a vein ran from that finger to the heart.

Rings can mean whatever you want but they do mean something.

I have always struggled with the ownership bit of marriage but esstentially that's what it is. It's love but marriage seals it "forever". As a free spirt, it's really tricky to feel bound, but I've come to see my ring as a gift of love rather than the constraints of marriage.

Helpmeplan · 30/04/2018 22:50

That is exactly how I see it FreeMantle. I wear the necklace he bought me when we had our last child and knew our family was complete. I wear the earrings he bought for a special birthday, and this is the one and only ring he will ever buy me. It's meaning is beautiful to me and not tied in marriage but our love for each other.

The marriage is just a legal contract to secure certain benefits, such as iht thresholds etc
