Reading, Poem, something or nothing?!? Wedding in 6 weeks

Hi, hopefully you can help me.

My wedding is in 6 weeks and we haven’t found a reading or poem or anything that we like and need to get something sorted.
We are having a civil ceremony so nothing religious, we have been together nearly 12 years and have 2 children of our own so struggling to find something that says ‘you’ve made it this far ok so carry on with what you are doing’

So any help would be great. We would like to have something to add of our own other than the basic 20 min ceremony.

Thanks!!

Like you we've been together 11 yrs and are getting married early next year an. I not keen on the traditional stuff about starting out life together and also not keen on religious stuff as its not a church wedding. I have been trawling the internet and came across these

Owlsight Marriage Ceremony by Mercedes Lackey “This bond, this joining, is not meant to be a fetter........ etc

The Irrational Season by Madeleine L'Engle "But ultimately there comes a moment when a decision must be made...... etc

I found this web site with lots of stuff www.ibizaceremony.com

Also found this very quirky poem "Falling in love is like owning a dog," by Taylor Mali..... for something very different

hopefully of some help

The other thing that you could look up to see if there is anything appropriate or would be appropriate with is bit of tweaking is reading for people renewing their wedding vows

Union by Robert Fulham

I read this at my sisters wedding last year, I also bought the print for them to keep so the author was recognised. It's easy to find on google

What is a Marriage?
It’s loving & cherishing, loyally relishing.
It’s hosting & toasting & Sunday roasting
It’s enduring, alluring & most reassuring
It’s guessing, confessing & nightly undressing.
It’s often surprising, involves compromising
It’s mending, depending, & can be heart-rending
It’s trying, relying, a little white lying
It’s snoring, adoring, occasionally boring.
It’s knowing & showing, & mutually growing
It’s packing & moving, anxiety soothing
It’s having & holding, the odd little scolding
It’s nursing, & cursing when driving (reversing.)
It’s compliment giving & always forgiving
It’s planning & booking & help with unhooking
It’s sharing & caring & dressing gown wearing
It’s walking, it’s talking & bottle uncorking.
It’s tender supporting & raucous cavorting
It’s secret confiding & shoulder providing
It’s readily praising & often amazing
It’s liking, respecting & calmly accepting.
It’s cleaning, it’s mopping, it’s waltzing & bopping
It’s needing, conceding & possibly breeding
It’s chatting, conspiring & thoughts of retiring
It’s playing & paying, it’s coping & staying.
It’s comfort when weeping, a warm body sleeping
It’s lives interweaving and always believing
That’s what makes a marriage

My cousins found a really special acoustic recording of fields of gold . I sobbed.

Brilliant suggestions thank you.

Peachypetite - I read Union for my friends wedding last year, it would be a good one though.

Ah I’ve been looking for readings recently and found it hard as neither of us are that soppy and I hate anything that’s cheesy and embarrassing- I love that dog quote that’s been mentioned though!

I also like Not perfect by bob Marley and I will be here by Stephen curtis Chapman.

I like this poem, by Wendy Cope (who is amazing anyway - she might have other things you like if this isn’t quite right):

Being Boring
by Wendy Cope

‘May you live in interesting times.’ –Chinese curse

If you ask me ‘What’s new?’, I have nothing to say
Except that the garden is growing.
I had a slight cold but it’s better today.
I’m content with the way things are going.
Yes, he is the same as he usually is,
Still eating and sleeping and snoring.
I get on with my work. He gets on with his.
I know this is all very boring.

There was drama enough in my turbulent past:
Tears and passion - I’ve used up a tankful.
No news is good news, and long may it last.
If nothing much happens, I’m thankful.
A happier cabbage you never did see,
My vegetable spirits are soaring.
If you’re after excitement, steer well clear of me.
I want to go on being boring.

I don’t go to parties. Well, what are they for,
If you don’t need to find a new lover?
You drink and you listen and drink a bit more
And you take the next day to recover.
Someone to stay home with was all my desire
And, now that I’ve found a safe mooring,
I’ve just one ambition in life: I aspire
To go on and on being boring.

We had 'I Rely on You' by Hovis Presley and a reading from 3 men in a boat about letting go of what you don't need.

cravingcake · 01/05/2018 20:56

dragonnoodle I love the poem you read and have decided to use this same one. Showed it to my close friend who we want to read it and she loves it and and thinks it’s perfect. Thank you.

We had a reading from one of my favourite books- the title is my name and they get married at the end so we just cherry-picked some appropriate bits and my brother read it. Could you do something like that??

BossWitch · 20/05/2018 12:49

lemons that poem sums me up completely. Thanks for posting it, I really enjoyed reading that. Feeling very contented with my boring life right now! Smile
