High street wedding dresses in winter

I plan to get married in may 2019. My budget for a dress is £200 max, so I plan to just buy a high street dress.

There are loads around now, but I dont want to buy yet as I hope to drop a couple of dress sizes first, so I thought i would start looking at the end of the year. But I am worried that the shops dont stock them all year and there wont be much around? Does anyone have any experience of this please?

I wouldn’t buy anything now. You’ve got more than a year before you’ll wear it and high street dresses are not always easy to alter.

Have a look around and decide on the style you like then you’ll have a better idea of what you’re after nearer the time. The high street dresses in now will almost certainly not be around next year (unless in the sale) but very similar ones probably will be.

So think style of dress rather than an actual one for now.

I bought mine in January (online high street) so they definitely available all year round.
I would do some wedding fairs and see what styles you like, now though. I think I bought mine a bit early. I really like it but worry I didn't look at much else. Honestly there are thousands out there - second hand wedding dress web sites, sample sales, specialist charity shops - so don't worry you won't get one for your budget.

Thank you. I am reassured that I will be able to get one now, thank you. Now just need to work out what i like! There is so much choice.

Wishing you all the best for your wedding oui. I am sure you will be pleased with your dress on the day. How often do people say they tried on endless dresses and end up buying the first or second one they tried!

I know what my ideal dress would be in theory, but its over £3000, so slightly over budget! Shock I havent seen anything cheaper that comes close unfortunately. But to be honest, as long as i like the dress end up in, and it flatters me, i am not too bothered.

I wore the Cressida by phase 8 it's currently in the sale. It was lovely and didn't look 'high street'

wonderwoo · 29/03/2018 23:21

Thats a gorgeous dress rowen. I need a long one though because i cannot walk in heels and also i have horrible legs, so want them safely covered up!

I do love the phase eight "hope" dress although too expensive and maybe bettee suited to someone less pear shaped!

I got a second hand dress from eBay that would have been £1200~ for £150. Worth thinking about!

Ouicestpossible · 29/03/2018 23:49

Thanks Wonder . Monsoon, Ghost, Quiz and Debenhams have a huge choice. However I don't understand why women pay thousands for " a dream" when most brides end up looking very, very similar.

I like Chorontte dresses.

I mean how nice us this for less than £400Z.

Ouicestpossible · 30/03/2018 08:33

SORRY! I did not mean that to sound so rude, for those that did spend thousands of their dress.
And you certainly don't have to like the off the wall dress I posted.

( mustn't post after wine consumption.)

wonderwoo · 30/03/2018 10:50

Ha ha oui you made me smile. Not so sure on the dress! Although I am thinking of not wearing white. Saw a nice floral bridesmaid dress in Monsoon I like.

Thanks for the advice. Feel a bit out of my depth with all this.

If you see bridal boutiques advertising sales, definitely drop in and have a look. You might not think you can afford a 'proper' bridal gown but I got my dress in a sample sale for around £300. I think it started off at over a grand.
Have a mooch about online too, it's amazing what you can find. There's a couple of Sell My Wedding Dress type sites that offer very affordable options.
Congratulations too, by the way! Thanks

wonderwoo · 30/03/2018 12:58

Thank you red. Great tips.

Have you seen the H&M ones? There's some really pretty ones, and some that would be ok for winter.

VileyRose · 02/04/2018 07:19

Mines from asos in January sale.

wonderwoo · 02/04/2018 08:08

Thank you. I will check out Asos and H&M

OP it might be possible for you to get a "proper" wedding dress on your budget if that's the look you want.

Second hand sites, Wed2Be and sample sales are all places to look.

My BF got hers as an ex-sample for £300. Given a dry clean it looked brand new.

Glitteryfrog · 02/04/2018 08:30

I didn't wear white. Wear something you love.

EgremontRusset · 02/04/2018 08:43

If you stalk the 2nd hand places online you might find the £3k dress you like between now and 2019 😁
I got my wedding dress for £200 on eBay, all silk and beading, best bargain ever

labcat · 02/04/2018 10:42

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 02/04/2018 10:52

I got my dress from ChiChiLondon

sheworebluevelet · 02/04/2018 13:28

labcat it's lovely but it says the model is 6ft! and the dress is pooled on the floor. Most of us will need serious heels!

jacobsgirl · 02/04/2018 14:23

Misguided recently starting doing a bridal collection ! Very pretty and affordable I'd have a look

In case you don't shop there it's an online store from which I have a lot of clothes and in my experience are very reliable:)

Good luck !

labcat · 02/04/2018 16:52

@sheworebluevelet I think if I was buying bridal from the high street I'd expect I'd need some alterations

sheworebluevelet · 02/04/2018 23:44

labcat I thought it was the other way round. Proper bridal dresses are specifically designed to be altered ( wider seams, quality fabrics etc). Whereas high street clothes have less scope for alterations.
Slightly concerned about my wedding dress as it is far too long, and I can't see a way of taking it up without foiling the lace edging ( it's one long sheath dress).
I like that ASOS has a petite section for shorties like me though. Have got a nice second dress to wear to the registry office that fits beautifully.
