Wedding rings in metals other than gold/platinum?

Letseatgrandma · 18/03/2018 16:53

DH has lost his wedding ring so we were thinking of getting a cheap replacement. Can’t quite stretch to platinum at the moment and white gold is a pain as it needs dipping.

Has anyone (or their DH) had Silver/titanium or tungsten as a wedding ring and can recommend it? I know silver is quite soft so would it end up really scuffed?

Any comments or tips would be much appreciated!

DH has tungsten. He has a manual job involving chemicals etc so needed a very hardwearing metal. 13 years on and it's like new.

ScienceNut · 18/03/2018 17:03

What sort of budget do you have op?

I ask as I have no experience of any other metals other than Platinum but I ask as we bought ours online considerably cheaper that a jewellery shop and they ahve lasted well.

Letseatgrandma · 18/03/2018 17:08

Under £50!

What sort of colour is his ring, Tallulah? Ian it silver? Or more grey?

I like the fact tungsten doesn’t seem to scratch but hae heard things about it being so hard that it’s difficult to cut off in an emergency?!

It's like charcoal grey. Will get a picture when he is home!

I have a white gold ring, married over 10 years and never been dipped. I do take it off for showering, washing up etc though.

LemonRedwood · 18/03/2018 17:11

Both DH and I have palladium - silver colour but very hard-wearing. Seem to remember they were around £100 each so maybe more than you're wanting to spend. Suppose price depends on size/thickness of band too.

Letseatgrandma · 18/03/2018 17:41

Thank you-would love to see a photo. Is he pleased with it? Is it heavy?

Ive got palladium too. Its meant to be harder wearing than gold.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 18/03/2018 18:05

DH and I have Whitby Jet wedding rings.

A friend replaced her lost platinum band with the same cut in palladium and you honestly can't tell the difference which means her husband hasn't sussed that it's different

LunarGirl · 18/03/2018 18:09

DH has a titanium ring. Not the usual band but he likes it. Couldn't get a brilliant picture but it seems in the same condition now as it was when new. He works in a manual job, it seems hard wearing.

DH has palladium too. I have white gold just because that’s what my engagement ring is and the metals should be the same so they don’t erode one another. Apparently.

PineappleScrunchie · 18/03/2018 18:12

Dh has a titanium ring. He didn’t want an expensive one in case he lost it. Problem is because they are brittle they are very hard to resize so he now has several as his weight fluctuates.

TallulahBetty · 18/03/2018 18:26

Here it is! It is quite heavy yes. It looks dull on these pics but it's usually shiny and completely scratch-free

My husband has a Tunsgten ring, it's a spinner ring (where the middle section spins) and he's constantly fiddling with it lol can be annoying.

If you YouTube tungsten rings, you can see how indestructible they are. My husband didn't want a ring that would dent or get damaged however the biggest downside to this is the fact that he cannot wear it at work (he's a mechanic) as the emergency services would never be able to cut it off and if he ever gained weight he would have to buy a new ring as you cannot get these resized.

They're amazingly cheap for the quality but if you're worried about emergency situations and not being able to wear it all the time I wouldn't go for it. Go for Sterling Silver or Gold.

I’ve not heard of this-is is a type of metal?

No it's not metal its a fossil (fossilised tree I think)

NamelessNinja · 18/03/2018 19:53

Titanium, tungsten and cobalt would be your non precious options. I personally prefer tungsten of the three as it is heavier and darker in colour. They are all hard-wearing however are so hard that they could not be easily cut in an emergency situation. They also cannot be sized or polished.
Silver is a very soft metal and really not suitable for everyday wear, it will become misshapen and deeply scratched very quickly.
Palladium is a great metal but you would likely be looking at £350+ for a gents ring

MammaH2018 · 18/03/2018 19:54

My husband has a titanium wedding ring, chosen as he has a manual job so needed something hardwearing and something affordable to replace if it gets damaged at work. Looks good and it was only £80!!! 😀

Appuskidu · 18/03/2018 19:56

I’m a bit surprised about silver being so soft. I have had a Pandora ring for years and years that I wear every single day that isn’t scratched or bent!

CakeAndChocolate · 18/03/2018 20:03

My DH has a titanium ring, it was £100. It's VERY hard wearing, he isn't particularly careful with it but it isn't scratched at all and is still perfectly round and we've been married 7 years. It's a sort of "brushed" silver colour. It is very light (as in doesn't weigh much) so I don't know if that would put you off.

Appuskidu · 18/03/2018 20:27

Is it a very silvery colour rather than grey, @cakeandchocolate?

mummyhaschangedhername · 18/03/2018 20:50

Cobolt if your budget it under £50. Palladium worth considering for the future or if your budget grows.

mummyhaschangedhername · 18/03/2018 20:51

Sorry, should say, my husband works a very manual job. His totally wrecked his platinum ring 🙈 so bought a cheap colbolt which was great and then got a palladium one recently with rose gold to match my new rings.
