Who did you take wedding dress shopping?

Hi,

I've seen a wedding dress online that I bought but I feel bad because my mum wanted to go wedding dress shopping, however I didn't want her opinion to affect mine (very different tastes) but if I'm not that wowed by it when it turns up then I'll not say anything about it and go wedding dress shopping with her and my nan (although I don't really want to as our styles are very different). Who did you have with you?

I did what you did and bought one online. I didn't want to go through wedding dress shopping. I'm not good at shopping at the best of times and being stood in my sucky in knicks with a stranger fondling my sinful bits trying to lace me into something too tight whilst I sweat and go bright red just filled me with utter dread! Plus I knew that my mother would just make it all about her.

I wasn't disappointed when my dress arrived. It was everything I imagined and wanted. I bought it from a boutique on Etsy.

I bought mine online from a department store. Had it delivered to the nearest store. Asked the 40 something woman in the changing room what she thought.

Mintylemons · 10/03/2018 15:10

No one. I looked online and then found one in a vintage shop. Didn’t occur to me to ask my mum as I find shopping fairly dull, and even worse as a group activity.

Wedding 1: my mum, we were living abroad and my mum came to visit and she & I went down to Cairns for a few days to find me a dress.

Wedding 2: late-DH. He saw the dress and suggested it as well.

I took my 3 bridesmaids as they are my closest friends and although we all have different styles they know me well. We found the perfect dress easily and they were very honest about all the dresses I tried on.

Couldn’t take my mum as she lives in a different country but I would have taken her.

Floralnomad · 10/03/2018 17:29

My mum and one of my sisters

MrsBearToBe · 10/03/2018 19:58

I went with just my mum. I wanted her opinion and her help in picking a dress that suited me and I knew she'd pick styles I wouldn't pick for myself! Best decision I made.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 10/03/2018 22:43

I took two close friends who I knew would be completely honest with me. We had a great time.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 10/03/2018 22:45

I took my Mum

I'd recommend actually going and trying on various different styles rather than buying online as it's very hard to judge what style will suit you until you actually model them.

DP and I went dress shopping together (same sex marriage) with my two daughters (17 & 20) and DP’s Mum.

I told the girls exactly what I was trying to avoid (looking short/fat/like a rolled pork joint!) and went from there.

I wish I hadn’t gone with the future MIL as she made the appointment all about her (she had history for that) but I know DP wanted her there and she also valued my opinion.

The girls were great (they both cried!) but DP had the most input as she knows me the best and knows all of body insecurities without needing to be reminded.

The ladies in the shop were fantastic - very easy going and friendly and not at all judgemental about me being a size 16/18. They stick religiously to our budget and took a lot of convincing for me to be able to try on a dress that was over budget - typically it was the one I bought!

DramaAlpaca · 10/03/2018 23:02

Just my mum. I trusted her judgement better than anyone.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 10/03/2018 23:07

I took my mum; it was a lovely day the both of us will always remember.

GreenTulips · 10/03/2018 23:12

I went on my own - saw a closing down sale and popped in!

Never occurred to me to make it a 'thing' and don't know anyone who set out to dress shop as family day out - don't get it

SoozC · 11/03/2018 16:56

I took my mum, but only because she was paying! It was the part she always wanted to buy for me when I got married so she had to come with (I was going to get one cheap on the Internet but she insisted). I'm lucky though, we have very similar tastes.

Spottytop1 · 11/03/2018 16:59

I also went on my own - saw a sale and popped in!

DeathByMascara · 11/03/2018 17:01

My mum & mother in law - she has two boys & her other DIL had her dress made by her own Mum, so thought my MIL would enjoy the experience. Then took my bridesmaids for a second opinion once I’d decided.

LuckyLuckyWoman · 11/03/2018 17:06

No one, but I did buy it from a store owned by my friend, so she was there to help me choose:)

LoveInTokyo · 11/03/2018 17:43

I live abroad and my mum and bridesmaids are back home, so I went to a few shops yesterday with my closest friend here and I’ve got two more next week with another friend. I would invite my mother in law, but I don’t want my mum to feel bad about missing out. If my mum comes here when I go for my first fitting I might invite my mother in law to come too because she doesn’t have any daughters.

Tequilaitmakesmestupid · 11/03/2018 17:56

My mum, sister and DD (11). Like Matilda, it's a same sex marriage and I was tempted to take along DP to buy our dresses together, but we've decided to keep it a surprise now.

Tequilaitmakesmestupid · 11/03/2018 17:58

Sorry, like Maitland

Ickyockycocky · 11/03/2018 18:08

Mum and mum in law to be. I really wanted my MIL to come as she has three sons and had never been wedding dress shopping. They had different tests but we all agreed on the final dress.
