Brother doing 'Father of the Bride' speech

Could anyone help my DH please? His Dsis is getting married in August, and she has asked him to do a speech as their dad passed away a few years ago. He doesn't know where to start and I'm no help.

At our wedding my mum did my speech as I don't know my dad, and neither of us have ever seen a Dad's speech at a wedding that wasn't unintelligible due to booze or language barriers!

So what are the key things that a nice father of the bride speech would normally include? He can hopefully adapt them as brother of the bride. His sis is a sweet demure, conservative (small 'c') early 30s sort of a girl.

He'd really appreciate a bit of guidance... Thanks !

I don't really know but imagine google could help. Amazon sell books on weddings, speeches etc.

Anecdotes about the bride as a child

Say she looks lovely

Say you are happy to welcome groom to the family

Ideally get a little teary

My brother did this for me recently and it was lovely. We're good friends as well as siblings so it probably contained more teasing than my dear dad's would have! He recounted various things we'd done together over the years and used those to illustrate aspects of my personality that my dh had to look forward to/dread... He took the opportunity to publicly embarrass me (all in good humour and taste) with some stories. Finally welcomed dh into the family and wished him luck :)

MY DP gave his sister away and made a "father of the brides speech"

Very short, to the point, a few stories thrown in. He managed to get it all on an A4 sheet of paper.

Start with the thank yous, people for coming, celebrant, etc?

I think he just has to say how beautiful she looks, maybe give a funny story of a time she didnt look as beautiful? MY DP went with the

"doesn't Dsis look beautiful, better not say too much or tiny tears will start the water works...too late"

Then welcome the new husband to the family, maybe tell a funny story about how they met?

Say on behalf of his family (mum) you just want to say how proud you are of dsis and how pleased you are she has met a wonderful man. Maybe a bit of advice on married life?

toast to bride and groom.

Good luck to him :)
