How much to spend on wedding present... ok so, "how long is a piece of string"..

background: very close friend of DH is getting married for second time. DH and his fiancee have been living together for, gosh, maybe 10 years. Asked what we could get them for a present, answer vouchers for a particular store. I have absolutely no issue with that, and think they've made a good choice.

BUT... I have absolutely no idea how much to spend. I know it's up to us, and different folk can afford different amounts... but we haven't been to weddings since our uni friends got married in the 80s quite a while ago, and we are almost at the point of friends' children getting married.

Not really sure what I'm asking here because I know a lot of it is down to what people can afford, what people want to spend... so hard for people to respond.

So, let me ask it a different way... if you and your DH/DP were invited to a weddding, couple already had set up home... a) how would you decide how much to spend on their present... and b) how much would you spend if you were going to such a wedding now? (don't need any personal/financial information.. just tell me what you think would be reasonable)

I think last time we bought vouchers it was £50 for theatre and 75 USD at a fancy home interiors store.

BTW we didn't go to those weddings, just presents as good friends.

Yep, about £50. Depends how rich you are though!

I usually give as follows:

Very close friends £50
Other friends £30
Work colleagues £20, or if as part of a collection £10

wow, quick responses, thanks so much!!

well, we're not megga rich but also lucky enough not to be living week to week or month to month - so comfortable.

Was thinking £50 - £60... then thinking we spent £20 ish on gifts in the 80s, and we';re better off now than we were then, so not sure whether £50 seems a bit tight?

For a very close friend I'd probably go more like £75, but I am from across the pond where people spend WAY more on wedding gifts, so I'm not sure if my perspective is a bit skewed!
