Looking back at the weddings I have been to over the years then, as a guest, very little sticks in the memory. The bride might obsess about the dresses, flowers and all the other little touches but, believe me, it all blurs together and no-one else will really notice or remember for long. Maybe that is not very well put but what I am trying to say is that spending huge sums of money will not necessarily make it any more memorable.

I think if you enjoy the day then that is what will stick with you most. Sometimes it is the little unplanned touches too. One of the things about our wedding I remember fondly is the point where we wanted the fizz pouring for the toast (Not the real thing as we couldn't afford it!) Some local ladies had laid on a buffet for us and opened the bottles of wine we had bought (from Tesco) to go on the table. However, the woman in charge said she didn't know how to open fizz and nor did any of her helpers. Immediately my two BILs and DH's two brothers got up and went to assist and then went around the guests pouring out. That was totally unplanned but felt like quite a nice family touch.

Plan the reception as though it was a party, not a wedding reception (not just in your own head, but when booking stuff, as there's often a wedding premium). Don't read any wedding magazines, and don't do any of the traditional things (e.g. flowers, big white dress, cars) unless you particularly want to - except speeches, as they're free :)

By doing what YOU want to do, and not conforming to pressure from friends, family and the media about what a wedding 'should' be. :)

The nicest wedding I went to was a church ceremony followed by a buffet actually in the church. The couple had very little money but were active in the church and so people in the church had done the buffet and handed round drinks. It must have been very cheap, but it felt like people really cared about them.

Have a look on Etsy at their handmade wedding series, some great ideas that can give you the personal touch for not a lot of cash

Try tissue paper pom pom flowers - something special but different and affordable!
