Who did you take dress shopping?

I need to go shopping for a dress asap and was wondering who you took with you?

Am seriously contemplating going on my own with DD1 (10). Lots of people have hinted that they'd like to come but don't really bother with me at any other time.

I'm not particularly close to my mother (even though she thinks we are but that's a whole other thread!) don't really have any close friends and am not close to any other female members of my family.

Is there anyone else who went alone?

I went on my own.

It's how you feel in your dress that matters, not other people's opinions.

Me, myself and I are hunting for my dress but I don't want white or wedding so really its just dress shopping Wink

But I went with my future sister in law to look for hers (less pressure with just us two). she then took her mum and bridesmaids to look at the dress she liked the most so they felt included but the pressure was off cus it was the right dress.

I went on a few browsing type trips with various friends, but I did my serious shopping (had my dress made so had design meetings and various fittings where the designer chopped and pinned the toile to get it right) alone. I think alone is best tbh - otherwise you end up swayed by what other people think/like.

I went with my mum and my sister (later was an older teen and was to be bridesmaid).

I went with my sister when she went wedding dress shopping, along with our mum and my DD, then 7y - she was to be bridesmaid.

Hulababy · 01/01/2012 22:22

My sister had already done some dress shop visits alone to short list.

I took my mum and MIL-to-be. Mum because she'd have been disappointed otherwise, MIL because she's got better taste than Mum and me put together.

If you and DD are a good shopping team, bugger everyone else. If you think she might fall for something you hate, and be upset that you don't want it, might be best to do a practice run on your own and get her along to help you choose between the favourites.

I went on my own; my mum was hundreds of miles away & I didn't have bridesmaids. I did feel slightly saddened that the experience wasn't more "romantic film-like" but then, I doubt if my mum would have been overcome with emotion at seeing me in a frock anyway,

Take someone whos opinion you will value, gets your style, body shape and will not tell you what you want to hear just for ease.

I went alone. I knew that if I went with others, I'd be swayed into wearing something that wasn't my personal style. I've got a very, very feminine look but that isn't my fashion style at all. So to avoid ending up in super-girly lacy ruffles with my mum/best friends going "ooh it's gorgeous" I went alone and surprised everyone. I still love the dress I picked even now.

Grumpla · 06/01/2012 22:37

I went on my own, found the dress, last one in my size, put it aside (not in a wedding dress shop) took my mum back next day to see it ONLY TO FIND SOMEONE ELSE TRYING IT ON!!!

My mum then sidled up to her enormous family group, inveigled her way into the conversation, and when she overheard that groom-to-be was getting married in dress uniform told her that the dress would clash horribly with it Blush and supplied her with an alternative dress to try on. She literally followed the poor woman into the changing room, grabbed the dress before it was even back on the hanger and bore it back to me triumphantly.

My mum is an evil genius. However, the other woman did look nicer in the alternative colourway.

I went with my best friend, on the understanding that we would, in one day, find a dress then go out for a meal and get plastered on cocktails.

3rd dress I tried on was the one! I'm really not a shopper, and I did as someone upthread suggested and listened to the wummin in the shop and tried on a few I wouldn't have otherwise considered and the one I liked actually had the same name as me (fate!) So I did go to another couple of shops, just to be sure, but one of the assistants, hearing that I had chosen a dress really, and that I had only been looking for one day, told me that I "couldn't possibly have found my wedding dress in just one day" Hmm

Well, that made up my mind. Went back, ordered the dress and headed to the cocktails- fab day!

Grin at Grumpla.

CupOfBrownJoy · 13/01/2012 16:59

Grumpla your mum sounds amazing! Grin

I went for a recce with my DM and and my best mate - to act as referee if DM got out of hand. Actually she was great and we had a lovely day.

I was then shopping with DM a few days later, and we nipped into a shop "just for a look" and I decided I loved my dress even before I left the changing room to show DM - it was a case of "Call off the dogs, I've found it!!".

I keep sneaking looks at the photos my mum took on my phone - I love it!

VikingLady · 03/02/2012 11:43

I reckon your dd would really enjoy it being just you and her, for something as major as a wedding dress. Plus kids of that age are very honest.....

I took my mum as she is the most honest person I know, and would have told me if I picked something hideous.
