I'm getting married at the end of Feb and I am doing all the girly stuff on my own because I don't have a friend to come and do it with me Sad

So far i have:

bought a vintage dress. It didn't quite fit and couldn't be altered so my dressmaker is using it as a pattern. She's making me a new skirt using the dress itself and a new jacket in a contrasting colour. She was supposed to phone me end of Dec to go in for a fitting but she hasn't so I need to chase her up first week of Jan.

Got a number for a mobile hairdresser. We have to be at reg office for 11am so I won't have time to go to a hairdresser.
I need to phone her for a chat and a practice run don't i? My hair will need a cut as i'm growing out a very short style and I think i'll just be able to manage a short bob by the end of Feb.

Have sorted flowers (it's what I used to do for a living)

I'm struggling with shoes. I don't wear fancy shoes generally so am struggling with justifying spending money on a pair. The only ones i do have are black heels but I don't know if they will go with my dress? It's a cream skirt and a dark green taffetta jacket.

Still looking for reception options. Will be about 30 people so thinking of a buffet in a local pub.

Rings - DP is sorting, just need to go and get my finger measured.

Am I forgetting anything important?

I do feel Sad that while my closest female friends will be at the wedding they all live too far away to help me with the organising.
My mum is useless, she doesn't display emotion and hates social events so hasn't mentioned the wedding at all, and changes the subject if i bring it up.
I just want to feel like someone other than DP is on this journey with me and getting excited about it too.

Thanks for the tip raspberry, I think they start stocking those in Spring dont they?

I have been scouring Ebay, there are some beautiful dresses opn there in the style I like but we still havent agreed on colours yet, my H2B wants me to go and help him sort his wedding clothes out but I dont know if thats appropriate really?

We have our legal notifications this Friday at 4pm, so it will hopefully start feeling a bit more official then.

Must admit to having loads of wobbles about this, I kind of wish we werent doing anything extrvagant but that church is lovely and we both got a lovely vibe while inside there.

queenrollo, Id be really interested in hearing more about your handfasting festival next year, we also want to get handfasted but the costs of everything are mounting up at the moment so we have to put it on ice for now I think.

I had to put it on Im watching as I lost it too ruby Smile

To be fair to myself though Im new here and kind of getting used to how it works.

Today I have been investigating booking a harpist for the ceremony, if its not too pricey I like the idea of one as they have quite a magical sound/vibe

queenrollo · 11/01/2011 17:19

been for another dress fitting today. She's making up the jacket and skirt and I have to go back next tuesday for some fine tuning and then she'll finish them properly.
Still haven't found any shoes. Thinking of going with a pair of ballet flats? DP not tall and this may sound odd but i don't want to wear heels and look the same height as him on photos. I'm used to seeing photos of us with me being shorter.

lastname we're doing our own thing for the handfasting. So we're not having a celebrant as such, but have asked a very good friend to officiate. We're going to have several cords/ribbons and ask friends to come up and say a few words/read a poem etc and then wind the ribbon round our hands. There will be some words chosen by us and some that we will ask friends to choose.
Then we're going to have some food. We've chosen our first dance song and asked a good friend to do a disco, so we'll have a good mix of cheesy wedding music Grin and also our favourite tunes (music is a big part of our lives). Then later on we'll have live music as I sing at a music gathering regularly and also will invite several other musicians who i met through our friend who will officiate (they work the healing fields at Glastonbury). Hoping to have a really nice fire to sit round too, but as i'm using a family member's paddock that may not happen. Most of our friends will be camping overnight and we're also looking into hiring a few tipi's so we can have a 'bridal' one and excited nephews will be having one too.

queenrollo, that sounds absolutely lovely!

queenrollo · 15/01/2011 17:14

argh!

all been going smoothly and now we're having stress over where people are staying.
DP in doghouse and feeling sorry for himself.
Told him to sort it out.

He's just trying to be helpful, but it all got out of hand.

We have the witnesses and their children staying here and photographer on sofa. DP inadvertently upset one guest by offering space to sleep to two others. I've told him to un-offer as i don't want anymore people than we already arranged.

I feel bad for him, and any other time having bodies sleeping all over the house is fine. But not on my wedding day.

on the Grin side - the rings arrived today and they are beautiful. DP chose them and I couldn't be happier, they are really quite special Smile

Queen, we have had similar problems. I have now reached the point where they all have the option to book at the reception and if not then its not my problem anymore.

I saw a wedding dres in a charity shop today I really liked, didnt try it on but if its there tomorrow I will.

queenrollo · 18/01/2011 09:32

lastname
I think he just got carried away. We have some guests living relatively local (1 hour journey to wedding) and others coming from quite some distance. We have arranged for some long distance guests to stay with local guests. It was two local guests that he invited to stay here, thus upsetting a friend at the other end of the country (as this friend asked weeks before for space and was told we had no room).

Anyway it's mostly sorted now. Thank goodness.

My shoes arrived yesterday. Need to wear them round the house to bed them in a little. Going for another dress fitting today. Need to pin DP's trousers up and take them to my lady to see if she can hem them for him. Need to take his good shoes to be resoled.
How does my list keep growing?

Hope the dress is still there lastname and that it fits Smile

Gosh queenrollo Feb is fast approaching hope all is going well. Could you have a hens party or something that your female friends could come to?

No mum here too, she lives along way away and I haven't seen her for a very long time. I really miss her right now. Don't have anyone to do the girly stuff with either. Thought I might ask DP to come look at dresses with me but not sure I will have a new dress anyway.

Your wedding and hand fasting celebrations sound wonderful.

queenrollo · 18/01/2011 13:56

ruby accomodating guests is not your problem! We have only a few people coming and most of them are part of our festival summer social scene, so they all know each other. We were just trying to co-ordinate so that we knew people had places to stay without shelling out for hotels.

melody hen party not really my thing and most of the people i would do it with live at least an hour (some 4 hours)away so it's not really possible either.

dress fitting went well, one more next week and then she'll do the finishing touches and my dress will be ready! Finalising flowers next week, just need to check something with my female witness and give the florist a measurement for the cake.

Hiya queen dress was still there but sadly a bit tight for me, I wasnt overly keen on a strapless number anyway as I am not as svelte as I used to be Blush

Back to the dress drawing board for me, although I have a good idea of the style I want so thats helpful.

Make sure you wear your shoes in a bit before the big day.

We are currently struggling with invites, we bought some blank cards to print ourselves but its turning into a nightmare so i have started looking at online printers but theres a few out there, if anyone has any tips for good ones Id be grateful

Wow your getting married this month! Grin

All fine here have dress, reception and hopefully car sorted. Now have to start practising making the food for the buffet and search for a second hand fridge/ freezer for it all.

Did your DP get his tweed suit?

How did the dress fitting go? What sort of style or era is it?

So exciting! Keep us all posted.

BibiThree · 02/02/2011 16:38

Cake idea: friends of ours had their v expensive wedding cake collapse the night before their wedding so bought 3 tiers from M&S and arranges flowers between them, it look so efforltessly casual and yet v beautiful.

Thelastnameleft · 02/02/2011 17:57

Heya all, queenrollo, sounds like you are almost there, how are you feeling?

I picked up the legal notifications today so need to work out where to send them [we are getting married out of area]

We have paid the deposit on the reception venue finally, still working on doing our own cards. Himself is working on that one and he is not doing a bad job.

Have collected all addresses needed for sending them out, when they are ready. Have tidied up numbers.

Ordered my dress [weeeeeeeee!] the other bits I got from there were so lovely I had to order from the same place.

Sorted out flowers, my friennd is making me a silk flower bouquet and matching head-dress, same for the bridesmaids.

Still need to confirm harpist, sort out mini-buses from reception venue, as people cant take their cars to where are getting married. Also need to sort out drinks for after the ceremony at the church, cake and rings.

I have a question mark over photographer, are they really worth it?

queenrollo · 02/02/2011 18:25

i'm having a skirt and jacket rather than dress and it's 1950's style.
Yes DP got his tweed suit, the trousers are with my seamstress as they needed taking up. he managed, completely by accident, to get one with a red stripe in it. It will match the flowers perfectly!

I'm excited and nervous. I know i'll cry, i'll probably be shaking so much i'll fumble putting the ring on his fingerGrin

bibi i'm just buying a plain iced sponge (from M&S probably) and the florist is making a small flower arrangement to sit on the top. Another friend is making a calorific chocolate cake to bring along.

lastname we're lucky that we know several photographers. The friend who is doing ours is a photo-journalist, but moving into wedding photography. he did the pics for a friends wedding last year and they are great. Do you have a friend who's a 'hobby' photographer who could do it for you?
