Why is the moon out so early in the day time these days?

DS has been asking me all day why the moon is out in the daytime. Down in the south it was in the sky from about 3pm.

I assume it's something to do with the earth tilting / longer days etc but does anyone have a 3yo friendly explanation I can tell him .

TIA

The moon is always there, so is the stars, we just can't see them sometimes because the sun is too bright. The moon moves so this is why we can't see it sometimes, the clouds also cover it.

Nothing to do with earth tilting or longer days, it happens all the time. When the moon is new (when you can't see it at all) it's in the same place as the sun (well, it appears to be from Earth, which is all that really matters for these purposes). As it gets bigger, it falls behind the sun, so you can see it in the west after sunset. Then when it's at its furthest from the sun, it's full and it rises when the sun sets and sets when the sun rises. Then it gets smaller and only comes up after the sun sets and stays in the sky in the morning, until it joins up with the sun again and you get another new moon. So the sun and the moon are both in the sky during the day at the same time a lot, and it's because of the clear weather that you can see it so well at the moment. Right now the moon is getting bigger, so you can see it in the sky in the afternoon. When it's getting smaller, you see it in the sky in the morning.
