NHS frontline - how are you planning for next week...dilema in our house

DH and I both manage frontline services. Last week Dh stayed overnight and did 3 days solid whilst I stayed at home with the DCs. But we both need to get in next week, with more snow predicted.

The DCs can move in with the grandparents and we could then move into work - we drive 30 miles one way but struggling to get car off our estate. Am seriously considering moving into work though there's been no provision made by work to do this.

I feel like am letting my team down - we're a small team and the half that live within walking distance are doing back to back shifts and exhausted.

But I'd also be letting my Dcs down as they won't get to school....

We need to make a decision tomorrow if we're uprouting everyone.

we have a similar dilemma though our jobs not as critical as yours. i would put jobs first this week. dcs will be worse off but not too much so- as much poss as those who are working back to back shifts if you dont make it in. though make sure you can get dcs to their grandparents safely.

lisasimpson · 09/01/2010 20:31

surely if it's that bad next week the dc's won't be at school?

twinklytoes · 09/01/2010 20:34

our head is the last to close doors - we were the only school in town open on friday. we also live a stones throw from school, so my dcs would be in. moving them across town would be a different story.

work is the way. just got to persuade DH that we're only driving one way and will take a suitcase.

I just read this (for no reason other than nosiness) and wanted to say thanks to twinkly, that sure is dedication to your job! Glad the NHS have people like you.

JustKeepSoddingSnowing · 09/01/2010 20:41

I would add vote for work and against school (and i'm an ex-teacher).

Big picture:

  • kids maybe miss out on some school (which won't be 100% normal as presumably lots of other kids not getting in, etc.)
  • you and DH work frontline NHS jobs.
  • you & Dh also make sure other NHS staff get to rest/refresh/come back to work ready to work

On balance a ew days off school is no biggie.

Assuming you & DH staying in work is actually feasible? if work have made no provision? are you just hoping for a spare bed somewhere?

Montifer · 09/01/2010 20:44

I second what LittleDucks said about dedicated NHS staff, good for you.

Would it be possible for the grandparents to come to your house so DC could still go to school?

If work need you there I think they have a responsibility to put you up in accommodation of some sort.

yousaidit · 09/01/2010 20:50

if you go for the jobs first, all i will say is people like me will be v v v v grateful and try to appreciate what starts loike you the nhs have

twinklytoes · 10/01/2010 22:33

well the suitcase is packed, its snowing too. not sure am looking forward to getting the car out in the morning, but we're going.

we're going to take over the accomodation issue and make the decisions for those above us. There's an empty building which we;ve had our staff put the heating on over the weekend and DH is going move some spare mattresses and bedding from his building.

Hoping to get home but we're planned for the worst.

Twinkly - our chief exec said they would put people up in a hotel if they couldn't get home. Worth asking anyway. Good on you for making a plan and backing up your team!
