Bad Kitten - why do the met office and the bbc not agree with each other?

I live in Kent. According to the bbc I should expect light snow tomorrow and Sunday , cloud on Monday and Tuesday and a lovely sunny wednesday.
The met office says something along the lines of 'hold onto you pants Kent because the shit is about to hit the fan again over the weekend'

Please explain this dichotomy of views.

Also the meaning of life would be nice.

and the recipe for fat free, full taste chocolate if you aren't too busy/achy.

Thanks.

I wondered the same thing, i'm in west sussex. On the night we got all that snow, the BBC said light snow showers. I do find though that the actual forecast is quite good by Caddy lee Preston.

Paolosgirl · 08/01/2010 23:18

I wondered this too. Not just slight differences between the 2, but ruddy great stonking differences.

FluffyForLifeNotJustForXmas · 08/01/2010 23:21

The Met office web site said no snow this weekend in the Midlands, the BBC, well.....

I always thought the BBC weather was shown in conjunction with the met office?

BertieBotts · 08/01/2010 23:23

BBC weather is usually wrong. Met office or ukweather is usually correct though.

Paolosgirl · 08/01/2010 23:27

BBC Scotland weather is best for us - the BBC tends to refer vaguely to that bit up there before moving swiftly back down to the south of England leaving us all going "stop, stop, go back, what did he just say?"

NumptyMum · 08/01/2010 23:30

I have a sneaking suspicion that where the BBC website is concerned, they do the forecast on a Friday then don't update again til Monday. Many's the weekend where I've planned things based on the forecast for my area, only to have it do completely the opposite!

Is the Met Office any better?

BertieBotts · 09/01/2010 02:17

This is my favourite weather site, usually accurate for me:

uk.weather.com/

MrsJamin · 09/01/2010 06:28

I prefer www.metcheck.com, they seem to be a bit more accurate than the BBC.

nicolamumof3 · 09/01/2010 08:28

loads of snow in west kent this morning

Wallace · 09/01/2010 08:46

met check said yesterday would be 3 degrees - it didn't get above minus 10!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/01/2010 09:17

metcheck I'm pretty sure are computer generated forecasts - (obv the written forecast isnt but the bit where you put in your location)

if you want something than the met office (who use their own models adjusted by human input to produce something that usually makes good sense) then meteogroup are pretty good. I do like the met office forecasts though, they are improving. (forget the seasonal forecasts, they are ??!)

I'm don't really understand how the bbc source their forecasts. I don't think they update them enough. also they often underplay expected totals. Not enough detail, hurried through, missing out the important details. In this weather they should have proper extended slots. On their website I'm not sure how they generate the forecasts for 'your location'

there's a lot of pressure to 'talk up' the weather, make it sound not too bad, especially in the holidays (everyone stays in bed if you tell them it'll rain all day, they won't spend their hard earned dosh.) The sun is always 'hot' and will be 'glorious' even if it only shines for 1 hour a day in August!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/07/2017 10:17

zombie thread, pity that is was bumped by bollocks.

rainman2 · 30/07/2017 22:10

I guess they don't have to agree; the BBC are now independent from the Met. Office so deviating is more likely than years ago. They would take info. from a number of sources, which may differ quite a bit. BBC weather people are still trained by the Met. Office but the agreement would stop there; some days there will be no disagreement, but more complicated forecasts can see some big discrepancies.
This summer is going downhill; the interpretation on that will vary.
You will always hear 'teasing' media comments like 'when is the weather going to be better, tell me it will be...' applies pressure to 'talk it up'.
August could be wet... but will the spin reflect that... not so certain. Hoteliers don't like 'bad' forecasts.

rainman2 · 30/07/2017 22:27

staying in bed..... joke?
