Where are the weather geeks?

Some models are suggesting 42 degrees in Bristol/Bath on Thursday.

I'm waiting for the Met Office to update their weather warnings tbh. We know about Mon/Tues but the forecast for the SW hasn't shown any cooling happening later in the week.

El Niño effects, I presume. Flood, drought, flood. Cyclical, though, not permanent. 🤞

TL;DR: Adapt.

I think some advice should be given out to people asap. I’m used to living in high temperatures (Near East, 40 degrees plus frequently in summer) with some outdoor work, and it’s best to switch to a different timetable and lifestyle pro tem. It’s good to rest in the afternoon in a shaded place, drinking water. We ate lots of watermelon, yogurt, hummus, baked stuffed peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, cold soups and flat breads. And yes, cold juice and ice cream!

Also, sun screen and covering up. No-one should be exposing faces and shoulders in the hot, midday sun. We had a lot of trouble with visiting British students to our university over this.

I hope schools and employers in the affected parts of England without air con and shades are going to be flexible. Pupils, teachers, admin & catering staff do not need to be sweltering in sweaty conditions, midday - 2pm especially. Imagine the kitchens at midday.

If possible it also means starting early, eg 7am or even earlier. I used to have a job that was 5-11am, then a long break, then a couple of hours in the late afternoon or evening WFH. Late dinner, sleep under sheets. DP is a specialist craftsman and I help sort out much of his timetable, and I’m being pretty robust around this as we’re in the south of England where the forecast is scorchio. Clients are being very receptive, luckily. No-one needs him conking out.

It looks like it's certainly going to be a hot few days. At the moment, the GFS (weather model) thinks things will ease from Friday onwards (when there could be thunderstorms) and Saturday, temperatures are more mid 20sC.

I'm in Scotland and I'm dissapointed that we will miss this hot weather. I also worked in the Middle East and so I am happy to work in 40 or even 45 degree temperatures.

Met Office have updated the weather warning to include Wednesday and Thursday.

I got up very early today (4am!) & did all my outdoors tasks by 10. I think this is going to have to continue next week. I'm very lucky that I wfh.

Going to be very difficult to sleep as well it looks like with night time temps 20+ degrees.

Sleeping is the worst of it for me. I keep waking on the night is so sweaty and horrible.

Keep it cool!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 22/06/2026 06:47

I'm fortunate that I can adapt my day (was at the parcel shop at 7 am on Sunday), and do things early in the day. I don't sit in the sun, so will be happily in my cool house reading and resting during the heat of the day.

Hate the heat though, roll on the massive thunderstorms!

MegiddoValley · 22/06/2026 06:57

I did some admin for today last night, and started today at 6am in the coolness of the morning. Cleared quite a bit of paperwork, and it’s now coffee time. Windows open for a while.

It’s four days to get through.

Adapt. Prepare. Make ice. Keep freshening bird baths.

@WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma I'm in Bristol. Just looked at Met Office and it's saying 39 at the highest, Thursday. I've only just started to branch out from the BBC weather forecast. BBC says highest 35 Thursday. Are you still seeing anyone saying 42? I've never, as far as I know, experienced temps that high despite having been to India but that was last century!
I'm feeling reasonably prepared but I guess starting to get a bit nervous. At least I haven't got to schlep into work (retired) but I have got a relatively new (to us, moved house in October) garden to look after.
We're in the process of having a massive water butt installed but it's not done yet! 🥴

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 22/06/2026 09:10

There's disagreement among the models whether it's going to be 40+ or 30+ with peaks of 36/37

I expect the amber warning will turn red at some point.

Thank you @WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma . Is there a forecast you trust or do you look at them all and make your own mind up?

Me too. It’s pretty cool where I am the sun hasn’t even burned the mist off the hills yet

This is what I'm currently looking at - you can change the model/time. UKV is one of the ones predicting especially high temps on Thurs
