My son lives in a small studio flat in a converted commercial building. The temperature in there is unbearable! What can anyone suggest to cool it? Funds are meagre

Portable aircon? Probably the only solution. You may be able to pick up second hand.

Desk fan with a tray of ice in front of it. On windows being blasted by sun, wrap foil around cardboard to reflect. keep curtains drawn and or use nets/voiles. when windows are open later in the day try and get a cross breeze running thru.

obv ensure all radiators etc are off, and minimise use of appliances. cool showers, cotton clothes, bedding etc.

Minimise time in the studio … make use of public spaces!

I have a similar situation, studio flat gets very hot.
Foil over windows. Cheap and quite effective. The more the sun can be blocked getting in the better.
Blackout curtains.
Opening windows when outside is cooler to get airflow, helps push out heat.
Large floor fan, can help circulate air.

When budget allows, portable air conditioner can be got from Screwfix and other places at around £200. Problem is it needs to be positioned close to open window, so need to try to block that window as much as possible but allow the air con exhaust pipe out.

Outdoors today got to 33, inside got to 25, but was cooler most of the time as long as air con was running. My air con is currently using around 1kW per hour in electric, so need to budget for electric cost in addition to purchase cost.

Wet tea towel around neck and fan

Close curtains, open windows when it’s cooler outside.
A couple of fans ideally with a bowl on ice in front of them. One fan that is on a stand or higher up works well.
If you go for air con you may as well go for an air to air pump that’s reversible so it can do heating and cooling.
