Awful Winter

The weather’s really starting to change now – mornings feel properly chilly and I’ve already caught myself reaching for thicker jumpers. I’m dreading the heating bills this year, they always seem to shoot up the minute the radiators go back on.
What’s everyone else doing? Do you try and hold out as long as possible before putting the heating on, or just cave once the house feels freezing? I’m trying to find cheaper ways to keep cosy without living under a pile of blankets.

Yesterday was beautiful. Sunshine and warm enough to walk through the woods in a fleece without a jacket.

I WFH and delay putting the heating on because bills are ridiculously high. I dress in layers at my desk. Spring is my favourite season but I try not to demonise winter!

Feels like winter already in the midlands, has rained since September began and it’s 4*c tonight. We’ve used the heating several times already this month

Not quite cold enough yet but when winter properly arrives I have a basket in our living room full of blankets, hot water bottles and fluffy socks.

We set our heating schedule to come on at 6am for 2/3 hours to warm the house up and then in the evening usually from around 5pm to 10pm it’s on. Currently we’re just putting it on whenever we feel cold

Oodies make the transition much more comfortable. But they're not the easiest thing to do housework in, sadly!

Feels like -1 here already this morning! Had to get up a hour early and click the heating on for the kids. It’s definitely going to be a cold winter.

IWasScaredToBeHeld · 22/09/2025 07:46

It was 4° when I woke up this morning. I’m already sick of the dark mornings, but at least we’re at about 12 hours of daylight still. Soon it’ll be closer to 8, which is horrid.

shellyleppard · 22/09/2025 07:50

I'm usually wearing three layers minimum in the house. If it's cold I put the heating on. Managed to to get some credit over the summer so hopefully it will last 😂

babyboy520 · 23/09/2025 02:43

Wow, that looks really cosy! At least I won’t have to worry about waking up cold in the middle of the night anymore, thanks for the tip!

Totally agree, once the weather gets cold I just feel lazy and drained, it’s the worst.

Heated mattress pad on the bed and an actual duvet for the sofa has made all the difference to our heating bills over the last few years. We have the pads on a timer to turn on about half an hour before bedtime and as a result, we never have the heating on upstairs unless it is extremely cold out.

I find a single duvet warmer than a heated throw, not least because it is the right size to fit over a human body, those throws can be small.

We also have an open fireplace and find burning wood cheaper than using the heating but it only warms one room, so we tend to hole up there on the coldest days.

Socks also help.

Good thread, I am looking forward to reading the suggestions.

It's barely Autumn.

Thermal base layer. Bloody expensive though to get a good set.

Aldi. (Both merino wool and synthetic)

I don't know if they will do them this year though.
