Now the nights are drawing in and the temperature has dropped here today, I am wondering if has anybody heard any predictions of how we'll fare in the the UK this winter?

As summer was hot I honestly think winter will be bad, very cold, snow and litte sun

JenniferBooth · 20/09/2025 23:38

humidity today was terrible and i wonder why we have no named storm here as the wind tonight is bad

justasking111 · 20/09/2025 23:45

Fantastic crop of nuts and berries which used to auger a bad winter when I was a child.

Arrrrrrragghhh · 20/09/2025 23:49

So allI’ve heard it’s it’s going to be a bad winter.
However given my childhood in the 80’s, my experiences of bad winters were multiple years of proper snow. Feet of snow and thick blizzards in that lasted entire weeks in winter, even in the south east of the uk. Also actual minus temperatures from November to February.
I’d be amazed if we suddenly went back to that. My son who is now early 20’s has never seen a “bad” winter I realised.

Jan-Feb 21 was crazy cold! Not snowy but temperatures were very low for what felt like weeks 😄

I doubt it’ll be super cold this year though - certainly not loads of snow (SE England).

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 20/09/2025 23:57

This year is a mast year, bumper crops of seeds and berries. Nobody really knows if the trees do it because they know it’s going to be a harsh winter, or if it’s a survival technique.

SixSeven · 21/09/2025 00:01

We’ve had such a beautiful spring and long hot summer I can only assume we’re doomed for six months of shite weather now.

Handeyethingyowl · 21/09/2025 00:04

I have no idea about the weather but I also noticed all the millions of berries on the trees this year.

piscofrisco · 21/09/2025 06:33

It will be warmish, grey and wet. Rubbish basically.

GloriaSmud · 21/09/2025 09:26

It's very early to be looking ahead to the winter but there are some early thoughts here. And on Christmas 2025 from TheWeatherOutlook here.

NeverEnterFromTheBackDoor · 21/09/2025 09:29

There's absolutely no link to a bad winter if we've had a good summer, btw.

BloodyHellBob · 21/09/2025 09:38

Well our summer has been warm but not sunny (I’m not in England) and probably wouldn’t be described as “good”. I think winter will be wet and mild as it has been for years.

Apart from the little sun, I would love to experience a cold winter again and not the usual mild spell that we always seem to get over Xmas (SE here). Perhaps being wistful, but I miss the colder winters that I experienced as a child and don’t think they’ll ever come back again.

notimagain · 21/09/2025 09:51

Given met forecasts often aren't generally much cop beyond about five days ahead, if that, I'd say nobody has a scooby doo...

Justmuddlingalong · 21/09/2025 11:36

I always found the Weather without Technology website interesting, but it seems to not have had any updates for a couple of years.

im in lincolnshire and im hoping winter will be like last year, a bit of light snow that hardly settled (i'd prefer none thou)..i hate winter, its so depressing

BlackeyedSusan · 20/10/2025 11:43

2010 was really cold. (Minus 12c overnight)

La Niña year this year and predictions are for sudden stratospheric warmings leading to wobbles in the cold air mass pushing cold air into lower latitudes. Many videos have been US centric but some for Europe as well.

I've been staring at the berries worrying. And got the heebie - jeebies earlier this autumn about getting prepped for a hard winter.

RaraRachael · 20/10/2025 11:58

I was always led to believe that a thick crop of rowan berries meant a harsh winter. The bushes near me are laden with them so that doesn't bode well.

As long as it's not like 2010 I think I can cope.

EverybodyLTB · 20/10/2025 12:11

My son was born in 2010 so I remember it well. I remember going from prancing about in no coat (like I am now), feeling like autumn wasn’t even happening let alone winter, to then hitting mid November and being absolutely frozen. It was particularly horrible because I didn’t have much money and had to really monitor the thermostat and it was so stressful keeping the house warm. This year so far, I have only put on a jacket once when it was raining the other day. The berries are mad this year, bunches and bunches everywhere…. I’m definitely hunkering down and prepared for a very cold winter. Luckily much more insulated and better heating system nowadays so hopefully not too much of a battle to stay warm. Not sure if this autumn being a similar feeling means anything at all?

RaraRachael · 20/10/2025 12:25

2010 was particularly awful as we had 2 if not 3 waves of snow. Where I live we very rarely get snow and we had it in November, December and then I think in February as well. It was my first year post divorce on my own and everything seemed to go wrong.

PlaydohClub · 20/10/2025 13:01

I read the first few replies of thread and instantly thought about the 2010 winter. It’s the year dh and I moved to London in our early 20s. It was absolutely freezing, I remember waiting for the overground in the mornings and my toes would go numb.
The lake was even frozen over in Hyde Park.
It was very unexpected and that’s even after growing up in the NW where I’d been used to the colder weather.

We’re back up north now and the winters have been very mild with the odd cold spell but nothing like the cold winters I remember when I was little.

Like other pps have said, I’ve also noticed an abundance of berries. I don’t know what that means but there’s definitely more than in previous years.

SwirlingOctoberEmotions · 20/10/2025 13:10

I remember 2010! Huge snowfall here beginning on November. It didn’t snow again but didn’t get above freezing for weeks - so the snow didn’t melt. Anyone not in an all-wheel-drive vehicle couldn’t get up any hills. I remember filling up at the garage when someone who’d filled their windscreen washer with just water was asking what could they do - wait till temperature rose was the unsympathetic answer.

socks1107 · 20/10/2025 21:47

I remember 2010 and that year i had he kids in hats on my birthday as it was cold, same as this year it was a cold birthday . Also post divorce and little money so we shared a bed all winter - it was lovely tbh the three of us snuggled up together

Silverbirchleaf · 20/10/2025 21:50

I’m no still waiting for the Indian summer we were promised.

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 20/10/2025 21:59

I expect the berries are because of the spring weather being good rather than that trees have psychic ability to predict the impending winter weather
