Tips for toddlers in hot weather

Do you have any gems of wisdom to manage toddlers in hot weather? My daughter is 2, last year she was pretty happy to stay in a playpen in the shade or indoors when it was very hot. She's charging about and interested in everything now so might need some strategies up my sleeve. Thank you

I opened this with the intention of posting 'Listen very careful to Mummy and do as you're told'.

Eat in the shade, drink in the shade, hat, sunscreen...

What hot weather?
It is below 24 in London.

Keep her in shade, let her play with water, do not put layers on her. She will be fine.

If you go to a country with above 30° keep her inside 11 to 5pm. Wake her early and let her play and stay awake late.

Hat. Sunscreen. Plenty of water. Carry on as normal.

Yeah hat and suncream and then do your usual activities. She's not going to melt.

Do you have a shaded wall or patio in your garden? If so, water painting - bucket of water, paintbrush, let her “paint” the wall and patio.

I also have a 2 year old and its just business as usual for us. If we go out its hat suncream, loose cotton clothes, lots of drinks and ice lollies and avoid the park at peak times of day so we go out earlier or later.

I also get a lot of the little plastic juice bottles in aldi to throw in the pushchair to encourage drinking if they dont want to use their reusable one.

Get them outside as early as possible and let them know what the general routine of the day will be and explain why. Say we don't want to be in the sun at this time because it's so hot and it's bad for us because of x,y and z, do we? Get them to agree to things so they think they're making decisions and will comply with the routine and drinking more etc. Also, windows open very early and then closed before it starts to get very warm and close the blind and curtains at the same time to keep bedrooms cool. They can make their own ice lollies by pushing a spoon handle through a small yoghurt pot lid and putting it in the freezer. Then they have something to look forwards to that they have made. Get them into routine of putting sun cream on as soon as they get up, before they put their clothes on so they have a good base layer and top up as necessary. Also, you could put a wet clothe in the freezer for nighttime. Put it in a bag to avoid damp spots and use to cool the cot/bed down before bedtime.
