Slipped on black ice

Just that really. Wearing sturdy walking boots, walking the dog, nearly home and slipped on black ice. I went backwards, bashed my elbow and smacked the back of my head on the pavement.
Felt very foolish; why do we feel this way? It was an accident, and now feeling a bit sorry for myself.
I am ok, bit of a headache and was initially shook up but over that now. Ddog didn’t react at all 😂

Hope you are ok. I am terrified of black ice. I am lucky I can work from home during this weather. I had a helpless fall like that a few years ago and still remember the shock of it.

MEgirl · 07/01/2025 13:15

I did that a few years ago. Came down forward on to my hand and ended up on my side in the middle of the road. Unfortunately, because of the way I fell, I ended up with a frozen shoulder which took 2 years to recover from. Give yourself a bit of TLC.

I've been left with a fear of ice and try not to leave the house when it snows.

caramac04 · 07/01/2025 14:02

Thank you both. Daft thing is I walked out and looped back so I’d already covered that stretch once. I feel like I’ve had a punch on the nose weirdly.
Dfam concerned as I’ve had 2 falls forward last year and hurt a wrist each time. Last time I couldn’t drive for three months. I can explain why I fell though so it’s not really a concern.

My neighbour slipped on ice last January whilst walking her dog and broke her shoulder, they operated on her, but some months later weren’t happy with her as she couldn’t lift her arm past half way, so they operated again. She is 79, very fit, but was unable to walk her dog for 8 weeks each time, we had a rota to walk her. I’ve sprained my ankle in ice once and I am ultra careful now.

Councils in England should grit pavements as well as roads

ForPearlViper · 07/01/2025 16:18

It is lethal out there at the moment as the snow has started to melt and refrozen several times now. I'm sorry, OP, it does really shake you up doesn't it? With the best will in the world, local authorities can't grit everywhere.

I am so scared of falling on the steep roads near me that I always use a walking/hiking pole in this sort of weather. I'd recommend it as it gives you that extra little bit of security. Might also be good for you when out on uneven or wet ground with the dog - especially if you are accident prone as I am!

midgetastic · 07/01/2025 16:22

Yak traks are good I think

SleeplikeababyTonight · 07/01/2025 16:24

So sorry that happened op, the none-icy patches lull you into a false sense of security (well they do me). Do your boots have rubber grips? There are also things you can get to attach to the bottom, I've forgotten what they're called, but dm wears them, and hasnt slipped once since.
My df, now sadly no longer with us once slipped over, and people just walked on by; not one of them stopped and helped 🙁

Hopefully you can have a nice bath, and a sweet treat to cheer you up!

Completely agree, where I live there is even a stupid bridge over a motor way, which they don't grit. It is only a low fence so if you slip and fall over it, you're a goner!

Lucyaugust2007 · 07/01/2025 16:28

Sorry that happened.

Might sound silly but have you tried putting old socks over your shoes?
I was surprised how much it helped.

I absolutely agree and I hope that some of them start getting sued for negligence when they don't do them.

I am terrified of icy footpaths, and black ice is just so insidious. You often don't know it is there until you have ended up on your arse.

I've got to know where the worst and most likely areas for it are in our town. However, I often avoid going out when I know it is likely to be icy.

PauliesWalnuts · 07/01/2025 16:36

Yak trax are really good - I got them for trekking in Nepal but have been surprised at how much I’ve used them here. I wore them last night actually. Kahtoola microspikes are also very good but I’d probably use Yak Trax if mainly on paved surfaces and microspikes on non-paved.

Talesfromtheriverbank · 07/01/2025 16:37

I won’t go out. Seriously. Fell once and broke my arm so not risking it.

LaPalmaLlama · 07/01/2025 16:38

Another one for Yak Trax. They just slip over normal shoes and boots so quite flexible.

LocationChange · 07/01/2025 17:33

I’m so sorry this happened to you. It happened to me on my way to school over and over as a youngster back in the day when we were expected to make our own way and my mum shoved me out onto the ice and told me to deal with it. I’ve never got over it. I wish that all I had felt was foolish.
I now use studs for when it is really treacherous out and they are a game changer. We also keep a sack of grit and I keep some in the car and sprinkle it round with a hand trowel if required. I don’t care if I look foolish for doing that!

jenmagiciansgirl · 08/01/2025 01:07

I hope you have no lasting problems and don't feel foolish. I've altered from someone who went out in all weather , to being terrified to go out on this ice ( got osteoporosis)

caramac04 · 08/01/2025 10:40

Thanks all. I’ve got some overboot stud things so I’ll get those out. I didn’t think I needed them yesterday but obviously I was wrong.
I’m ok, bruised elbow, sore wrist and bump on my head.
I’m tempted to stay in today but don’t want DH walking dog as he’s older and more vulnerable to a fall. Won’t recognise it though.
I worry a bit because my dm bumped her head and died from a bleed on the brain. It’s 0 here but could reach a balmy 2 this afternoon.

Is this an advert thread set up by the Yak Trax comms team?

elliejjtiny · 08/01/2025 10:47

You poor thing. I slipped on mud on monday. Not hurt at the time (landed on bum which is well padded) but felt achey the next day. Was very embarrassed though, hope nobody I know saw me. Hope you feel better soon.

Calmhappyandhealthy · 08/01/2025 10:50

Horrible for you. Do you need checking over by a medic?

I've decided not to go for a jog / walk today as it looks so icy outside 😬

Calmhappyandhealthy · 08/01/2025 10:53

Good god thats awful. Some people 🙄

On my jog yesterday I saw a sheep caught in a hedge. I wasn't sure how I was going to get him out, but thankfully, after a chat, one of his sheep friends sorted him🥳

jenmagiciansgirl · 12/01/2025 01:07

Hope you are ok. It's a nasty thing to happen. x

PunnyRobin · 12/01/2025 18:02

ill admit when im riding my bicycle im taking it a bit more careful with the ice @caramac04 hope you feel better
