Heading to Cornwall - St Ives next week. Weather forecast is not great. We have packed raincoat etc , do i need to pack winter jumper etc ? Never been to this place and don't want to underestimate the weather. Please advice.

If you live in St Ives, Can you please tell me how's the weather looking there.

Waterproof but not a heavy one, sweaters, beach clothes, sandals, trainers.

heading there myself right now.

ignore the forecast. Always wrong,

Definitely take a jumper each. I'm sitting in my SW house with the bifolds open and it is quite cold!

It’s not Antarctica. Just take layers so you can take on/off as needed

Winchester100 · 26/08/2023 11:43

It’s 17 in st ives right now.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/08/2023 11:44

Several quick drying things are better than one woolly jumper. I'd definitely include a couple of long sleeved t-shirts for protection against sunburn, windburn, cold and being sandblasted on the beach.

It isn't looking awful for next week but you'll probably need a light waterproof jacket for any sudden showers. Temperature's look like being about the 17C or 18C mark so not really cold. (I'd probably make do with one jumper or fleece jacket to save space in the suitcase!)

anunlikelyseahorse · 26/08/2023 13:08

Take a fleece, especially if you plan on swimming as it can be chilly getting out of the sea. But it's Cornwall so you'll need welly boots, walking boots, trainers, flip flops (joking!) but if you are planning walks, take proper footwear, and obey the signage on cliff footpaths to keep you safe.

We were there this time last year.
it was a bit breezy, some light rain.
this was what we were expecting.
my usual wardrobe (except for heatwaves or below zero) is layers, including long or 3/4 sleeve T-shirt. 3/4 jeans as I am not a big fan of shorts.
yes maybe a jumper or hoody or two.
light rain jacket
some sort of waterproof ish trainer or walking shoe.

Visited Cornwall many times. If it’s a heatwave in the home counties expect 20-22 and a sea breeze. Always pack a waterproof, esp if planning to be on the beach or on the coastal path. For the latter, walking boots or proper walking shoes. Beach/swimming/surf shoes for the stoney bits (there are some at St Ives); trainers and sandals/sliders/mules/Birkenstock for the evening if you need them.

Clothing: I pack T shirts (mix of short and long sleeves), thicker hoodie or cardigan, thinner hoodie, walking trousers; jeans, maybe a skirt or dress, maybe shorts. Swimwear that fits activity and temperatures : Wetsuit, jammers, tankini.

This year our weather was forecast much as yours but turned out better. St Ives day we did was one of huge waves and a bit of drizzle that was - after we left the beach for return to holiday let - an evening downpour. It was the only rain that week.

Probably no one living in St Ives now to reply - it's sadly all second homes!

But Cornwall is like UK. Pack for all eventualities in layers, I'd suggest. People sea swim all.year around and some of St Ives beaches are the most inviting, so take your swimmers and wetsuits if you own them.

St ives has a permanent population of 11,000 approximately. It’s a thriving local community and still has a proper identity despite the holiday homes.
