..old enough to remember pinatubo and the talk of it affecting the weather (very mild winter & enormous autumn storms)...

hunga tonga seems less severe, but can we already tell if it will affect us as well?

The 24hr pressure trace from Chatteris weather station shows the atmospheric 'ripples' from the Tonga eruption. The first pressure wave arrived Saturday evening

The first wave travelled ~10,200 miles and arrived 14.5hrs after the eruption (avg speed of ~700mph).
The second wave is from the 'other side' of the eruption, which travelled in the (longer) opposite direction, and took 21hrs to arrive.

we cool (if a bit scary)
thank you.
I guess it's too early to tell, really.

Did Mount St Helens affect the weather at all? Can't remember the VEI but Hunga Tonga was one order of magnitude smaller than Krakatoa, but one order of magnitude bigger than Mount St Helens

The ash cloud was nearly as big as mainland Europe after a few hours, I'd say that amount has a chance of causing weather effects

Amateur/muppet disclaimer, just very interested in volcanoes (and weather)

iirc mt st helens was more explosion, less ash.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=zoMRwyNhqJ4&feature=youtu.be this video has some great images of the ash clouds and pressure waves.

thanks
I find volcanos fascinating, if absolutely terrifying.
