Hurricane Ida

She is one scary beast. It looks like Louisianna is in for a really bad time on the anniversary of Katrina.

At the moment she is cat 4, still explosively deepening with no signs of an eyewall replacement cycle. Radar is showing an area of sustained winds of over 140 mph, though officially they are still 130mph.

Seems there's some maintenance issues with the hurricane hunter planes, so it could be a few hours before another fly through is done. An astonishingly bad time to not have that data.

Its worrying.

Well there's my twitter account finally put to good use. I find it amazing to live in a time where I can find out so much about places so far away, particularly love google maps so I can go and look around places that people are talking about. The people in houses right by the levee in LaPlace must have been terrified!

MrSlant · 30/08/2021 15:46

Thanks for all the links!

MrSlant · 30/08/2021 15:59

This looks like the traffic cam from your third tweet (when I zoomed in I could see one 2/3 the way up). Yikes!

My friend just told me her house is completely gone. They're safe but Sad

purplesequins · 30/08/2021 18:59

oh shit soda Sad

bicarbonateofcherrysoda · 30/08/2021 19:07

She's ok at least. During Katrina she was missing for days when the people she left with decided to go back, no one knew if she was ok. It just seems really unfair that it's happening to the same people again.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/08/2021 19:58

oh no Soda :(

Thread with ariel photos of Grand Isle, Forchon and Houma

As for those trapped on Grand Isle sound like they are ok from this:

Ramon Antonio Vargas @RVargasAdvocate
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto on @WWLAMFM says he sent a helicopter crew that made visual contact with trapped in Grand Isle following Hurricane Ida. The crew got thumbs up from those on the ground, who are trying to clear the roadway onto the island.

At the moment they are still unable to land a helicopter or get a boat in but the Sheriff is on record as saying he's 'not too worried' about those still there as they've experience with these type of conditions.

At the moment no further word on casualties (lets hope it stays that way as far as possible).

Comparison of the forecasting for Katrina (and actual route) 16 years ago v Ida. The forecasting for Ida is remarkably impressive.

Reports are that it will be November at the earliest before power is restored to New Orleans and many of the badly hit surrounding areas.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2021 09:04

November! Shock
Surely they will be able to get in some big generators to get power up, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.

Ida is still causing havoc outside Louisana

Jennifer Lambers @jlamberswx
Incredibly sad news tonight out of Lucedale, MS. Flash flooding led highway 26 to collapse in George County, just adding to #Ida’s death total. 12 total involved, 2 fatalities, 3 critical. All lanes are closed, with the collapse length ~50-65 ft, and the drop ~20 ft.

So far no more word on casualties in Louisana itself. But they are expected. They are now worried about a staffing crisis at the hospitals as many evacuated or are unable to get to work. On top of damage to hospitals, lack of power, oxygen shortages and just covid generally.

It sounds like a continuing nightmare.

PennyRoyal · 01/09/2021 11:42

My friend in Baton Rouge has no power and no idea when it could be restored. It is very hot with high humidity so no aircon is making it difficult. Having said that, she is grateful for no damage to her house (apart from garden mess!).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/09/2021 07:40

It must be very difficult without power.

Flooding now in NY 8-10 inches of rain from the remnants of Ida.

OP posts:
purplesequins · 02/09/2021 07:45

I hope most people can get access to generators. or at the very least (camping) solar panels to charge phones and lamps etc

NeverTalkToStrangers · 02/09/2021 09:33

I hope they're being careful. More people died from carbon monoxide poisoning after hurricane Laura than from the storm itself.

RedToothBrush · 02/09/2021 10:25

9 deaths from Ida in NY and NJ so far.

I've tried to look for how many there were in LA and at this stage it doesn't look like they've reported many. Last I saw was 2 there and 2 in Mississippi.

I find it shocking that theres been so many in the NE where the storm has been a lot weaker though. Its not necessarily about the extremes of weather but how you cope with them.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/09/2021 11:54

Absolutely. If the infrastructure isn't built for flash flooding, the result can be devastating for relatively little rain.

In a way I was quite surprised to see how well so many buildings stood up against the winds that Ida produced.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/09/2021 13:21

Mind you, they had 5 inches in 3 hours. No amount of mitigation in a city would cope with that.

Bill Fanshel @wfanshel
The rainfall total of 2.37 inches from the remnants of Ida at the Philadelphia Airport on 9/1/2021 broke the daily record of 1.80 inches set in 1952. I had 3.97 inches in my Bryn Mawr gauge.

Its a bit wet.

I’m not sure I’d want to be in Bermuda right now. Larry appears to be heading in that direction.
