We usually drive to Spain through France on holiday, but this year because of Covid we decided earlier this week to fly to an all inclusive resort on the Greek island of Kos (it was a Tui deal).

We're really looking forward to it but in the last day or two the temperature seems to have gone up a lot to between 97° and 102°!

I'm more used to around 85° and I'm worried that this will be dangerously hot. I've done a lot of Googling about it and there doesn't seem to be anything negative, and apparently Kos can be quite windy which keeps it cool.

I also spent a holiday in Mykonos in my 20s with no AC and it was fine (our rooms this year have AC). That was a long time ago though so temperatures may have increased a lot since due to global warming.

I'm trying to reassure myself that because it's a small island it won't feel as hot, but wondered if anyone had recently holidayed in Kos or nearby and experienced these temperatures and were ok with it.

We went to Turkey about 15 years ago and it was 40f most days. The only problem it caused was that when we went on a scuba diving afternoon, it was painful to walk across the deck in bare feet. Otherwise, we just kept in the shady parts. I didn't like it that hot though.

We were in zante a few years ago and it was over 35c every day while we were there. We had air con in the room and spent the days round the pool and going for a swim every time we got too hot.

IMO, it is completely different being too hot on an abroad holiday rather than in the UK, I don’t know why, but I find it far easier to deal with the heat in Greece.

40f is fucking freezing.

Thanks for the reassurance so far!!

You often hear about British tourists dying from the heat in Greece, but I think that's the mainland and I think they are typically elderly.

I've been to Kos can't remember how hot but I definitely remember it being windy and that helping.

40c, although I can't imagine trying to walk across a ship deck in bare feet at 40f either!

I was in Madrid once when it was 43. It was for a wedding. Due to the heat it started at 8pm and went on all night. One day we went to visit an outdoor pool and had to take a taxi to do a half mile walk but if you have aircon a pool and walk around in the evening you will be fine.

PeonyTime · 24/07/2021 17:49

Used to live somewhere hot.
Over 40C we used to slow down a bit, and said daily life became an effort.
Over 45C and we used to stick to inside places.

40C in Kos will be much more pleasant than the nearly 30C we had in the UK recently because of the lack of humidity.

Kick back, relax, and enjoy your holiday.

If you have aircon and a pool you'll be fine.

Go out early before it warms up too much. Spend 11-3 either in aircon having a long lunch or nap. Or spend it in the shady end of a pool.

I've been to Egypt when it was over 35 degrees at night and over 40 in the day. I'm still alive. I sweated a lot whenever I wasn't in the air conditioned room.

Suzi888 · 24/07/2021 18:02

I’ve been to Gambia, everyone but me disappeared from 11-3pm.
As long as you have air con, drink plenty of water and stay in the shade you’ll be fine. If you venture out because it’s windy, apply factor 50, a hat and take a bottle of water and do not go to a remote area. If the wind drops you can quickly overheat. Get up early on those days and then take a nap in the room if you think it’ll be too much.
Enjoy your holiday Smile

IME (DH’s country is landlocked and 40c+ in summer) you adapt quite quickly and accept having sweat trickling down your back and between your boobs.

Sun hat on if walking in it, drink plenty of water and take regular dips in the pool or tepid showers. Electrolyte tablets are beneficial in hot weather as if you are drinking a lot of water and sweating, sodium levels reduce which can make you feel lethargic/fuzzy. I take them in hot weather and after exercise but don’t overdo them.

Some really great advice on here thanks - a lot wouldn't have occurred to me either!
