Company closed but still have to take as holiday?

So basically our company is closed today due to the snow-
I came home early yesterday as the roads were awful so I know I have to make this time back up.
Today those that can work from home can- but I am admin so have no way of working from home so have been told to take it as holiday or make the time back up next week (9 hours)
Is this right? I would be happy to work today if they had given me resources thanks

I'm sure I read that legally if the company is closed they have to still pay you.

MongerTruffle · 02/03/2018 07:44

If they close due to snow they have to pay you as normal, and can't force you to take it as annual leave, but they may ask you to work from home (which you clearly can't do).

I’m pretty sure that if they close the company and do not provide you with a way to work from home they cannot FORCE you to take it as holiday?!

Pinkroseuk · 02/03/2018 07:45

Yes that's what I thought- just didn't want to get my facts wrong if I question it with the boss!

We have to take two weeks off over Christmas anyway as the company shuts so we only get about 15 days (when I work all bank holidays) to choose holiday anyway- I can't get my door open this morning as the snows drifted up it so don't really want to use today as one of my days holiday!

If the workplace is closed
If the workplace is closed because of disruption and the employee doesn’t usually work from home, employers can’t usually deduct pay. Employers might be able to ask staff to go to another workplace or work from home.

From the gov.uk website:

Thanks everyone - I think I will question it next week when we're back in work!

Pinkroseuk-
You should really talk to CAB about your last update. If you are full time, there’s no way you should only get 15 days holiday! The company can nominate some days holiday for you to take, but I’m pretty sure it’s up to a certain percentage of total available. I’m sure someone else with the knowledge will be able to provide more info!

It isn't. As long as the company are giving the 5.6 weeks minimum, they can tell their employees when they can take their leave. EG teachers.

InaConfusedState · 02/03/2018 07:55

Cat OP gets 15 days on top of the leave she’s required to take at Christmas, so total leave is more than 15 days.

Pinkroseuk · 02/03/2018 07:58

Yes we get the correct amount of days in a year but then have to take Christmas out - we normally finish about 20th December and go back 3-5th jan depending on where xmas falls- it does add up but just a pain if you want to take a two week break in the year somewhere
