Are we really in for at least 10 more years of wet summers? :(

Heard this on the radio this morning.

Feel quite 'sad' about it, if it's true.

The metoffice had a meeting yesterday and in the summary here, it mentions weather cycles and how it might affect things.

'Tis a depressing thought if we're in for quite a few years of wet summers Sad

MadeOfStarDust · 19/06/2013 11:21

Nope - I refuse to believe it - we are going to have a fabulous late July through to mid September - it is going to be lovely - it really is... you heard it here first.....

I am normally a pessimist - but I'm telling the weather it is going to be lovely and it damn well better be!!!

That's the spirit, MadeOf ~ positive thinking is what's needed!

We haven't had a wet holiday yet (I'm 49) - we went away in the sunny week in May last year.... somehow the weather-worker-outers like us...

and this year , mid-August we will be in Devon.... it will be nice...... Grin

I'm hoping that now that I've asked this question on here, the weather gods will do whatever they can to prove me wrong!

I'm going to try and stay positive and not believe the people on the radio!

:)

I honestly think they are just guessing.14 years ago when I was studying horticulture,we were continually told that future summers would be so dry that we should start planting drought tolerant plants. We all know how accurate that was.Hmm

The Met office link states that apart from 2010,5 of the past 6 summers were wet-wrong.2011 was incredibly dry,I remember fretting when we were haymaking because there hadn't been enough rain for the grass to grow long enough. We didn't get any significant rain until April 2012.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/06/2013 20:12

Tbh, I reckon they don't have a clue. To me the arctic sea ice melt is a real concern and I feel that it could be a strong driver in our weather patterns.

Sorry it's not a very scientific analysis, hopefully will be able to come back to it in a few days when I hope to be feeling a bit better.

ChewingOnLifesGristle · 19/06/2013 20:17

Lol they can't seem to forecast very reliably for the next few days so I wouldn't worry too much about the next ten years according for forecasters.

OYBBK, hope you're feeling better soon. Here's a hot chocolate and some flowers for you Brew Thanks

I couldn't believe the radio this morning. I think I actually do suffer from SAD and definitely have low Vit D, so I was actually thinking OH NO!!!

But as you all say they really haven't got all the answers. I saw that the bbc news had a piece on the weather last night and watched it, but the up shot of that was that they don't know what causes the jet stream to shift but that the Sea Ice melt has something to do with it.

I should know better than to listen to the radio news!

It was very hot and 'steamy' here today. Nice cool breeze at the moment though. Hope everyone sleeps well.

Xxx

trouble is now I have a manual job for a month..... and I have to work in it!!!!

mumat39 · 11/07/2013 00:02

Madeofstardust, hope you're getting a nice tan with the work. Whatever it is you've done, I just wanted to say Thanks. The weather is definitely helping my vitamin d levels. :)

Mumat have you tried St.Johns Wort ...tincture...for SAD. I have used it for years. Grin

mumat39 · 12/07/2013 00:35

Rules, I've never tried St. John's wort. I'm on anti depressants and have been for a while and I don't think I can take St. John's wort with those.

I keep wondering about one of those SAD lamps, but they are quite pricey. Have you tried those?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/07/2013 20:55

I use an sad lamp and also take vit d in the autumn winter.

I think the moral of the story is, if the radio/news gives a long term forecast then the opposite will be true.

Over the past few years our weather seems to get stuck in a pattern depending on the position of the jet stream. We seem to be stuck on oven at the moment!

mumat39 · 14/07/2013 00:34

Hey Kitten. Hope you're feeling better.

It is hot at the moment.

I take Vit D too, but only on dark gloomy days. Can I ask which SAD lamp you use? Would you recommend it?

Thanks again.

Hi....no.....they take St.Johns instead of anti dep in Sweden and Switzerland etc . You have to do what's best for you. Sunlight is brill as it creates vit D so sunlamp thing must be beneficial.
