met office warnings

Once again the west seems most likely to suffer flooding. Heavy rain sweeps the country tonight and then again Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday also sees gales for many especially southern coastal counties.

SE
No rain so far today and feeling very mild at 13 degrees. Just waiting for sun to come out??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2013 13:23

amber wind warnings now

pigletjohn - not necessarily! Rain depends on the moisture of the airmass and the temperature, so it depends where the weather systems form as to whether rain is created.

However, I've had a message from a friend in Australia where they have gone from +40C heat, fire and drought to 500mm of rain in just a few days. Now that is extreme!

PigletJohn · 29/01/2013 14:38

but doesn't the world have, say, one billion tons of rain a year? So if most of it falls on Basingstoke, so much less is available for the rest of the world?

digerd · 29/01/2013 15:44

The weather works in mysterious ways, and rainfall has its own unique logic which we cannot fathom.
I remember being told that one year Kenia had floods that had never been experienced before. Don't think there is a maximum amount rainfall for each year in the whole of the world.

I also remember the 2006 long heatwave in which only the Thames valley had a hosepipe ban for months as I had to endure lugging my watering can everywhere and being bitten by unusual Exotic Mossies that kept me awake at night itching for weeks Grrrr,
My Brother in Milton Keynes kept saying how they had had rain, but not here.

digerd · 29/01/2013 15:47

Kitten
Had just a bit of drizzle between 2-3pm today, but the wind is very mild and still 13 degrees - but no sun.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2013 15:50

thanks for the update digerd :)
It is amazing how mild it feels out there (which Im pleased about because my super warm coat isnt waterproof!)

pigletjohn, not at all - it depends on global temperature (the warmer it is, the more water it can hold) and weather patterns to either pick up moisture from the ocean or to dump it on the land. I suppose there is a finite amount of rain that could occur - if all the oceans bubbled away Wink

Well, unfortunately the situation looks set to continue.
warnings for Friday

OP posts:
pepperrabbit · 29/01/2013 18:49

Wind has picked up here again (exactly as you predicted!)

digerd · 29/01/2013 19:00

Kitten
I knew that about warm air being able to hold more water/moisture than cold - my DB who has a BS Honours degree in Applied Mathmatics and Pysics told me, when I was telling him about my humidity levels in my house that with my new radiators it was less, but when heating went off it went back to what it was. I never took Physics at school, and had assumed the warmth had dried the dampness out.
Glad weather is to stay mild

Might need to create a new snow watch thread for as early as this weekend Shock off to work, more later.....

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2013 08:02

(Btw, hope those in the NW of Scotland haven't blown away this am)

WhispersOfWickedness · 30/01/2013 08:52

I just came on to ask about that, Kitten! Light snow forecast for here for Sunday by the met office...

oricella · 30/01/2013 08:57

reporting from the north - my shed roofing has ripped off overnight.. and goodness knows what was in that storm, because my windows look absolutely filthy; it's still pretty gusty out there

digerd · 30/01/2013 12:27

South Herts
Been sunny all morning a mile away, but where I live there is the edge of a band of cloud in SE/SW that breaks up into smaller ones
Says 12 degrees, but the wind much colder than yesterday. This band of cloud seems to be moving northwards.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2013 12:52

torro have issued a convective discussion for north England and south Scotland - including isolated tornadoes, CG lightning and moderate sized hail.

LillethTheCat · 30/01/2013 13:11

Really will be waking up in Oz then. Must remember my ruby slippers Grin

It is very windy out there, just been driving on the A1 and Ive never known it so loud. Still at least it wasn't 129MPH like they had in Scotland last night according to reports I heard this morning.

Im not cold today though.

Im in North Yorkshire BTW.

mankyscotslass · 30/01/2013 14:08

I think a squall line went through here between 13.20 and 1325. The front doors at work blew open and I was almost blown off my feet. There was about 3 minutes of torrential rain, then it settled to just very windy and a bit wet.

Why does this always happen on bin day? Our road is full of empty bins rattling along and falling over.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2013 14:53

not quite organised enough to be a squall line manky, but it certainly seems to be trying to arrange itself into one! I think maybe a gust front instead looking at the radar. wind warnings out in your area

Tomorrow it looks to remain very windy. Dry apart from southern Scotland (am going to get the washing out on the line pegged down well!) again wind warnings out.

Friday - rain warnings for the south. possibly some sleet or snow over the chilterns and through the east midlands - across into EA.

Saturday - feeling colder, but pretty much dry.

Sunday - getting rapidly milder from the NW with the SE holding onto the cold longest.

No need for a snow watch thread yet I feel.

OP posts:
digerd · 30/01/2013 15:52

SE
Sun still shining weakly, but very gusty and chilly.
My all -knowing Taxidriver told me today that SLEET was forecast for our area on Friday.
South Herts. 10 degrees atm but a very chilly wind. Was too warm in my outdoor dog walking clothes yesterday so wore less today and was too cold.
Can't win.

WhispersOfWickedness · 30/01/2013 17:05

Phew, thanks kitten Grin

blackeyedsusan · 30/01/2013 20:27

w mids.

I saw a trampoline blow over today. in someones back garden, near school. (where the mega hail was) i don't remember there being a strong gust at the time, probably the effect of fences and houses. there waas a massive gust while we were collecting the children, aand a collective ooo from the parents line!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2013 21:35

Mega hail blackeyedsusan? Can you say more please? ( trampolines are a running joke among severe weather bods!)

OP posts:
blackeyedsusan · 31/01/2013 07:23

a while back. pmed you then sorry to disappoint you.

it was not that I saw a blown over trampoline, but one in the process of blowing over...

blackeyedsusan · 31/01/2013 07:25

it was code as I like to stay a bit vague aabout which city we actually live in. Wink

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/01/2013 07:26

Grin understood!

Got quite excited as hail was forecast for yesterday!
