from the met office

I'm afraid further flooding seems inevitable :(

By Monday some very high rainfall totals indeed.

Well, good night :)

That'll be why they were out sweeping up leaves and clearing the gutters with a vengeance today then!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 18/12/2012 22:22

Blimey, a sensible reaction from a council. Very impressive!

At least lots of people will be off school and work for the Christmas break, so it won't be quite so devastating as it could be. (positive :D )

TwoSillyHatsWithBellsOn · 18/12/2012 22:42

I think it's got to the point where severe rain just seems like normal weather we've had so much of it lately, I'll be wearing my wellies tomorrow but can't think of any other contingency plans. If I lived somewhere flood-prone I'd be dusting off the sandbags again. Sad Really hope this weather doesn't spoil Christmas for too many people.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 19/12/2012 07:47

Twosilly, you are very right, people are just getting used to it. I know though that there are mners who do get flooding and I'm hoping that they've been able to prepare for it.
It looks pretty worrying this morning I'm afraid with some parts of the SW perhaps seeing over 100mm by the end of Saturday. That is a lot for saturated ground.

Other good contingency plans include simply clearing gutters and run offs from leaves and checking your air bricks. (Temporary sandbags can be made out of carrier bags and earth to block airbricks that look like they are submerging) also of course if you are in a vulnerable area, moving important things away from the ground floor, locating insurance docs, charging mobiles, having a back up plan for pets.

Can I ask about the North East and flooding? My road has been flooded twice in the past 4 months or so. My postcode on BBC weather suggests its going to rain nonstop from now until Friday. Normally I wouldn't be so bothered, but on a Thursday night I travel 45 mins each way to do a qualification and tomorrow we have an exam which I really can't miss. Is it going to rain bad in the North East (Co. Durham/Yorkshire border) or is it just going to be light rain just ongoing? Im worried I wont be able to go and therefore have to forfeit my exam and pay a further £100 (which I can't really afford - well can, but the new carpet will have to wait) to take it another time. So any news about the rain in my area please.

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 19/12/2012 17:39

Lilleth, I'm afraid it's not great news. I think you could see in the region of around 20-30mm of rain tomorrow. Can you leave earlier in the day? Normally I hate the thought of people making decisions based on what I say in case I wrong, but if you can make things easier getting there tomorrow, then that is what I would do, even if it is being over cautious.

You aren't going up into the hills are you? The met office are warning of snow above 500m.

OP posts:
LillethTheCat · 19/12/2012 18:24

Thanks Kitten. No Im not in the high hills. I leave late afternoon and there is no reason why I can't leave early, though of course I have to get home again traveling between 9 and 10PM.

OYBBK, my mums meant to be coming to London for Christmas. She's in Exeter- she was intending to get a train here on Monday- but I know the line was closed before when there was flooding?!

Please tell me the rain is going to ease off!?

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 19/12/2012 19:02

Friday isn't bad, but Saturday is concerning I'm afraid.
They've been doing some preventative work on the line I think??

OP posts:
LordFlasheartsCrackingNuts · 19/12/2012 20:03

Hope so! Argh, well, hope for the best.

If it was snow instead of rain I would be so happy. I think we are going to have a disappointing winter like last year- 2 days of lovely snow and thats your lot.

Bloody rain...

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 20/12/2012 11:20

BadRoly · 20/12/2012 13:15

LordFlasheartsCrackingNuts · 20/12/2012 15:00

Thanks- I'm keepng an eye on the waether reports!

OhYouMerryLittleKitten · 20/12/2012 18:44

No change in the picture. Saturday looks awful but Sunday dries up before the next onslaught that night.

The village next to me in Devon is flooded very sad for all the people living there and all the shop owners too! Hmm

GloriaSnow · 22/12/2012 17:12

Have already posted this on the Christmas thread, this is about the First Great Western train disruption in the SW. Note this bit: First Great Western advise customers with non-essential travel to not attempt to travel West of Taunton in either direction.

Some pictures of the flooding from the BBC website.
