X Class flare heading directly to Earth, arriving tomorrow. Possible auroras, if the cloud gets out the way and it's dark enough.......trying to be optomistic Smile.
And..it's not rained here for 2 whole days!!!!!

I would love to see the northern lights. What's my best bet without being £££. I live in SE England so assume travel to Finland or iceland is going to be necessary for a decent stab at it!

Donki · 15/07/2012 22:35

Well, the sky is too light to see anything yet except where it is cloudy... and we have about 90% cloud cover atm.
:(

Ohyoubadbadkitten · 15/07/2012 22:43

Have been chatting to dh. Next years hols will be in the winter so we can go northern light hunting. I've wanted to see then since I was little.

mcfee · 15/07/2012 22:52

Me too! Except I have none of the insider knowledge you have!
Can I expect to see anything tonight? Not too cloudy.

Labradorlover · 15/07/2012 23:29

Mcfee........possibly........Not the with bells on fluttering around the sky, faint glow on the horizon stuff.
Am checking the facebook page of Aurorawatch. One person reckons they've seen it in Cumbria........At this time of year, I don't totally trust that as it could be wishful thinking looking at twilight.
But I'm going to head out with a labrador in the car, a bit later. DH has elected to stay in with sleeping child, as it's not likely to be impressive enough for a 6yo

Interplanetary mag field is pointing nicely south which also helps.

There a totally unscientific school of thought that the best time for auroras is actually around the equinoxes. Best I saw was 30/10/2003. Pop that date in the Aurora archive link on the FAQ's page on Aurorawatch and look at the graph.

Nothing here last night, nothing tonight either but not as clear and still quite light.

Labradorlover · 16/07/2012 02:39

Well, tonight I've seen several foxes, some stars, beautiful twilight and just possibly a hint of the aurora. As I don't have a fancy camera with long exposure thingy, I can't confirm by looking at an enhanced pic. Wasn't committed early enough to get into deepest, darkest countryside though....

However, I've had a lovely time to myself, had my DH in hysterics, laughing at my excitement, bemused a labrador with a late night adventure, and accidently disturbed a couple shagging in a car Blush

It sounds like it was quite an adventure :)

I've seen on another site that it was seen as far south as Essex (I guess the darker nights down here help) Amber alert just been issued. Sadly our sky is grey and precipitating.

NaturalNatures · 16/07/2012 16:53

We saw about 20mins of faint white and green pillars, nothing spectacular, very quick, didn't last long, only saw about 5, the sun hadn't set either at 2am. Haven't looked at the photo's yet.

Cloud cover atm.

Donki · 17/07/2012 19:47

Saw 1 green pillar through a tiney gap in the clouds on Sunday - so I chased up the A1, and then East to get out from under the cloud - nothing except a fox, some beautiful stars (cassiopaea was very bright) and an owl, the aurora had retreated north again. Had I been able to stick around, I think I would have seen it an hour later judging by the timings of photographs on Aurorawatch and Spaceweather, but I had to go home to bed....
:(
I am determined to take the Young Donki out to see them if at all possible.

Labradorlover · 18/07/2012 12:57

Donki, Grin
Will take DD out hunting come the Autumn, when's there's a better chance of seeing something slighly moer exciting. She already knows how to interpret the Aurorawatch graph.

Not just the YD - I have threatened to phone school up to tell the care staff to take the kids out in the middle of the night if necessary...Grin
