Whats the silliest/most random thing you have used to de-ice your car?

Was just wondering as I had misplaced (yet again) my scraper, the only suitable thing I could find was my Boots Reward Card! Hmm

In the past (in the days when cassettes were de riguer in cars) I have used half a cassette case!?!

So, is it just me that uses random items to scrape off my windscreen?

(My neighbours can often be seen wielding a kettle of hot water Shock to deal with their de-icing needs!)

We've used a frisbee in the past. Did a cracking job too!

Morrison's fuel reward card.

Grin at frisbee!

Think there may be something in inventing a reward card with a de-icing element to it! Hmm

I'm a bit of a shortarse short and I can't reach the middle bit of the windscreen on my Xsara Picasso when it comes to having to scrape that bit, so have to cover the windscreen when frost is forecast. I got a silver windscreen cover from a £shop and that's doing a great job but last winter I didn't have one for a bit, so used a picnic blanket; one of those with a silver backing. I put it on the wrong way one night though and the fluffy side got frozen to the windscreen, leaving me with a slightly fluffy windscreen when I pulled it off the next morning!

I used a Boots card yesterday morning too (both the proper scrapers were in my car which DH had borrowed, none in his). Nothing silly or random about that.

I don't think I've used anything odd to de-ice the car, but once there was an incident of digging the car out with a frying pan. (staying in a 'company flat' in america; no shovel; carpark snowploughed clearing middle but piling it up over cars. company complained of damage to frying pan. And if a former colleague of mine reads MN I'm totally outed!)

On Monday after we had all the snow I used a broom to clear all the snow off my car and then all I could find to scrape the icey bits off was the rigid plastic lid to a tupperware box. It did a good job though.

I know I've got ice scrapers somewhere.

It really is true that you can de-ice a car with hot water. People will think the glass will crack, but it doesn't. I actually use hot tap water in a plastic watering can, but I've heard of people who use boiling water out of a kettle. That might not be good for the paintwork.

Because you are using hot water, it warms the glass so it doesn't re-freeze.

You can have much innocent amusement by watching your neighbours who stand around expecting the windscreen to crack.

Oh I remember the days of cassette boxes..... Recently I've used a CD case

Of course you can de-ice with hot water - though warm will do. The downside in really cold weather is that the runoff is liable to turn your drive or the pavement around your car into a skating rink.
