NOAA pages.

Although it isnt a particularly powerful hurricane (though all hurricanes are dangerous if you are in their way) it is interesting to note that the 3 day cone has NY city in its range transitioning from hurricane strength to Tropical storm strength.

Here is a map of the mandatory evacuation zones in Manhattan:

a significant area prone to flooding from even barely there hurricanes by the looks of that.

I think that is why they have been so concerned about whether the storm will move through at high tide or low tide.

BBC just said that the hurricane is still a couple of hours from NY, but that the sea level in some of the harbour areas is already 3 1/2 feet higher than normal.

I just got up - 3am - to check my son and the house and make sure everything is safe and no flooding. We are in mid, north Virginia but we have not lost power - in our area most electricity lines are underground. But we have had very strong winds and plenty of rain.

DS and I made emergency funfetti cupcakes yesterday and we spent the day in the house doing puzzles and games. DH did not let me panic shop - we have all the essentials, although I want him to get a generator set up before the next storm. Things seems to be calming down, but still raining hard. Luckily we had new gutters installed in July and they seem to have coped well.

bbc report it still seems to be at hurricane strength as it goes into the NY area :( It looks as if it sadly hasnt been over hyped.

I am glad you rode it out well Spamm :) I hope you can get back to sleep ok. Thanks for checking in and updating us!

tornado warnings issued for parts of NYC :( Tornadoes are one of the hazards with hurricanes (along with torrential rain, winds and storm surge)

Sad

I have no idea how large structures such as skyscrapers would ride out a tornado! I guess in a hurricane they would be small and fast - so not the Great plains type but even so, narrow ones can still be very very damaging.
