Queensland's getting some awful weather at the moment and it looks like there's more to come.

Bloody glad I live in NSW, that's for sure! It's not good in certain areas up there.

So much for the land of perpetual sunshine, hey.

OneFishTwoFish · 02/01/2011 16:45

Oh god. I'm going to Brisbane for 6 weeks in a month's time. It had better not rain, we have quite enough rain here in England!

thumbwitch · 02/01/2011 16:51

It might have dried up by then - Brisbane isn't too bad anyway, it's more places like Bundaberg and Rockhampton that have copped it.

OneFishTwoFish · 03/01/2011 08:56

I hope so, though I suppose I shouldn't complain about rain on a holiday when there are people who have lost their homes.

Are you in Sydney, thumbwitch? I am visiting for a few days and really looking forward to it as I have never been to Sydney. I will have 7M DD with me and was looking for some suggestions of things to do.

HowsTheSerenity · 03/01/2011 09:26

I have five friends who have lost everything. House, crops, dam, business. All gone.

We were flooded in (outside Brisbane) for two days which was bad, but what happens whenthe water comes down from the hills. Is it going to get worse? I really hope not.

Is Gladstone under water?
DH and I worked there for a year, Rocky was our nearest point of culture (ie cinema with real seats), was very shocked to see the mayor of Rocky on the tv news a few days ago.

Looks horrendous.

I had to lol at an e-mail from another ex-Gladstone friend to say that the KFC there was out of chicken (although Red Roosters' supplies were Ok )

slartybartfast · 03/01/2011 09:30

dumb question - how did it happen>?

HowsTheSerenity · 03/01/2011 09:42

Monsoon season. Waaaayyyy to much rain. Flooded towns in areas that were once flood plains. Watertable could not handle the amount of water. Dams, creek and rivers overflowed.
Once in a century event.
Towns cut off, food prices are going to skyrocket. Economy is going to take a huge hit.

slartybartfast · 03/01/2011 09:45

thanks serenity. once in a century Shock
that isnt a usual problem in australia is it?

is this an age old problem of building where they shouldnt?

terrible

HowsTheSerenity · 03/01/2011 10:02

Well the towns and farms have been there for years. They have flooding but nothing to this magnitude. It is like an inland sea in some places. No land for miles, waves and everything underwater.

Luckily there have not been too many deaths considering how many stupid people play inthe flood waters, try to drive through flooded creeks etc.

ONefish - no, I am north of Sydney by 1.5hrs. But there are MNers in Sydney - if you post a thread in Living Overseas, saying "Calling all MNers living in Sydney" or something, at least one of them will give you some useful hints!
