Assessment of roads today affected by the snow

Well we had a bit of a trek from the Midlands to London today and thought it might help some if I reported back.

The M1 was absolutely fine for the most part but on the Buckinghamshire stretch it was awful! It seemed as though it hadn't been gritted at all. There was little traffic but everyone was in the one lane and doing 20 miles per hour!

The rest of the M1 though was absolutely fine, as were the roads in London. Of course the side roads looked icy but the main roads were fine.

On the way back the M1 North wasn't so bad but there was one bit, again in the Buckinghamshire area where it was like a sheet of ice for a short while.

Overall all was OK but thought it might be helpful just to let people know how the journey was.

Oh yes - and we couldn't get water on to windscreen. The water hadn't frozen but the motor or something that makes it come out seemed to have frozen which was a bit of a pain!

Do you mean M40 and Buckinghamshire

Or M1 and Bedfordshire?

wineonafridaynight · 19/12/2010 21:03

I mean M1 and Buckinghamshire - they both go through Bucks I believe. There was certainly a sign at the side of the road that said 'welcome to Buckinghamshire'. Grin

bump for very helpful thread :)

RTKangaMummy · 19/12/2010 21:42

oke doke i only know South Buckinghamshire

I had forgotten about the rest of it Grin

meltedmarsbars · 19/12/2010 21:45

You need the Traffic England site - put in the road you want to travel, and it will tell you the vehicule speed from the overhead gantry sensors.

Also the BBC travel pages let you look from the motorway cameras.

M40 Oxford to Warwick was atrocious today.

juneybean · 19/12/2010 21:49

Traffic England doesn't list A1 :/

NorthernLurker · 19/12/2010 21:52

THis is a helpful thread- shall we see if we can keep it going?

For me - not been far but no snow in York apart from a tiny icing sugar dusting - heavy frost though. A64 near York ok.

wineonafridaynight · 19/12/2010 21:56

Wow - first time I've started a thread that has been called helpful! Grin

I was hoping it would be. I remembered seeing someone say they weren't sure whether to make the journey from Milton Keynes to Northampton and thought at the time that the info would be useful!

RT Looking at the map it was probably Bucks then north Beds where the problems were! Couldn't believe it as the rest was fine.

Oh I should also add that other family travelled to same location in London from Surrey. Surrey roads were pretty dicey but as soon as they hit south London it was absolutely fine as well.

Try the disruptions search page?

meltedmarsbars · 19/12/2010 21:58

(That was for juneybean)

duckyfuzz · 19/12/2010 21:59

if you look at the map on trafficengland it shows A1 and A19 juneybean, plus weather conditions

juneybean · 20/12/2010 08:34

Oo thank you, sadly it's not our end I'm looking for :( but yet the snow still affects my plans!

HeroWantage · 20/12/2010 08:41

does anyone know what the roads between oxford and wallingford are like? and what Wallingford is like itself?

teddymummy · 20/12/2010 16:48

can I bump please. dh wants to come home from Midlands to Oxford/Henley tonight and will be going through Wallingford. We were stuck on the Wallingford road last year in horrendous snow.
Thanks

wineonafridaynight · 20/12/2010 18:29

I don't know where Wallingford is exactly but if his route covers the M40 he will have to be very careful I think. I heard reports of it being bad on both Sat and Sun and there has been more snow pretty much following the route of the M40 today as well! Hope he makes it home safely.
