how long is it forecast for?

Bloomin snow We have had it for nearly a week now, and its so cold (north east england)

I am really hoping that this weekend will see the last of it, but does anyone know if any is forecast for next week?

I know, I can't believe its a week since it started :( DTs' school is being rubbish at deciding whether to close or not, we aren't getting messages through until 5 mins before the schoolday starts, so packing them off to granny's regardless now, a couple more days off in Y2 won't harm them! My school is open, as is DH's, which makes it even harder. I hope it thaws soon.

My DD's secondary school have told them they are closing tomorrow, but warned the students to tell their parents not to simply keep them off on Friday just because its Friday IYSWIM. This is after late starts, sent home early etc. I have told DD if it snows again tomorrow, she isnt going. Its an hours walk for her, and i wouldnt do it - so i am not making her.

I spoke with DD2's nursery this morning, and they said they wouldnt be closing. Our town had a power cut yesterday, and the nursery staff just let the kids put their coats on to keep warm. I get the feeling that many other nurseries/schools would have closed.

I agree, its bad when they leave it to the last minute before announcing a closure. I can understand why, but it is still annoying

Outlook for Friday to Sunday: Friday, drier and brighter across much of the UK but rain, sleet and snow pushing into western parts on Saturday, and into southern counties for Sunday. Gradually becoming less cold.

During the early part of next week conditions will remain generally cold. Northern areas will see some wintry showers at times but also spells of fine weather. Windier conditions with more persistent rain, perhaps falling as sleet, snow or freezing rain for a time, are expected to affect some southern regions. Temperatures in the far south of the UK may then also briefly return to near normal values. Southern parts are expected to become less windy and more settled with spells of fine weather later next week, whilst the threat of wintry showers persists in northern and some eastern areas through the rest of next week and into the following week. Temperatures will generally remain below average and often cold throughout, widespread frost and freezing fog patches expected by night.

So looks like it'll still be cold and some wintry showers but hopefully not as bad as it has been over the last week.

Impossible to say - it did look like milder weather moving in from the SW over the weekend, but the extent of that and whether the warm is likely to suceed has been thrown into doubt today - I'd say its looking more like continuing into next week than not at the moment with perhaps a slightly warmer spell for a v. short while for the south at the weekend.

Tip of cornwall looks comically warm compared to the rest of the uk on saturday as modelled by gfs.

Our 5-day forecast (Leeds) shows the snow ending but the temperature dropping, so nothing will melt. In some ways a good thing as the ice is the real problem.
