A word of warning about next week....

As if the cold weather this week isn't bad enough, a few weather sites are forecasting heavy falls of snow for next Tuesday and Wednesday. TheWeatherOutlook says, "No real sign of a let up in the wintry weather, and it's possible that things will get even worse during the first half of next week, as a bitterly cold easterly wind brings more sleet and snow."
Something to keep an eye on.

(This is petunia BTW in a clever disguise to reflect the change in weather!)

Metchcheck is showing blizzards for us next week, but they have not exactly been accurate so far!

Hulababy · 24/11/2010 18:43

Yrgh - hate snow. Or rather hate having to face driving in snow - am 1000 feet up here at home and work is about 350 feet - so it a 5 mile decent all the way, not good in a little car.

GFS has gone nuts for next week - showing 35cm of snow for London!!! Although it shows interesting potential it will be the storm of the century if that happened. Quite amusing of it really.

metcheck postcode forecast is still automated manky I think. Its a bit of a random number generator!

thisisyesterday · 24/11/2010 20:57

so what's really happening?

i was checking the met office site which had predicted snow this weekend for me (in west sussex)
now it says nothing. just cold, but we're still coloured yellow on the wearher warning thingy

mankyscotslass · 24/11/2010 20:58

It's mad!

Grin

Would be great for the kids if it was true though. Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/11/2010 22:14

it does look odd thisisyesterday (tis the same in my area) but you are still at risk this weekend. I don't think the weather symbols are really representing the picture.

SantasMooningArse · 24/11/2010 22:20

I find netweather accurate for here (becuase it doesn;t rely on the Monmouth readings which never work here)- and they look grim.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 07:17

GFS seems to have moved away from the Armageddon storm next week - it still looks generally very snowy and cold though. No let up of this weather in sight.

In the mean time don't forget to check the met office warnings daily - snow can pop up very quickly in these circs.

thisisyesterday · 25/11/2010 09:16

oh jolly good, i do like a nice bit of snow! Grin

Bonsoir · 25/11/2010 09:21

On a Style & Beauty note, I wore my new Tod's flat olive green ankle boots - sort of walking boot style - this morning and am so so happy with them - thick soles, so very warm in this freezing weather, but not at all clumpy.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 13:37

GFS seems to show armageddon is back on!

They sound great Bonsoir - I don't think I hit any style and beauty points this morning! More yeti than human!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 13:53

The closer I look at the latest GFS run the more I am Shock because it is not only huge amounts of snow for much of the UK that it shows but also has strong winds associated with it (most of them being shown off shore at present) True blizzards in the real sense of the word.

Much as I love severe weather - if it came off (and it probably won't) - we wouldn't want this.

Beamur · 25/11/2010 13:55

I'm taking work home with me at the weekend then!!

DanceInTheDark · 25/11/2010 13:57

I read somewhere that the 'front' is coming to us via Russia so bad weather not really all that surprising if that is true.

cherrybea · 25/11/2010 13:59

Bugger, I bet my new washing machine doesn't arrive on Tuesday! Now that is a disaster.

NoahAndTheWhale · 25/11/2010 14:01

It isn't allowed to snow loads in London next week as I am working. I don't do it very often and will only get paid if I do it so I will be there.

Plus point would be if it puts the students off. I am doing marking and the fewer students that come the better as get daily rate Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 14:03

Not quite really Dance - the cold pool of air we have is from the north East (Scandinavia and on....) The concern next week is that the model shows a deep low comes up from south from the bay of biscay - lots of moisture and wind. As it meets the cold air the potential is for an awful lot of snow (or if we are un/lucky) an awful lot of cold rain.

winterpetunia · 25/11/2010 14:03

OYBBK ~ this is what I don't understand. Metmonkey messageboarders and netweather are going on about heavy snow for everyone this weekend and beyond but the metoffice/bbc forecasts are saying that for us in Leicester, we're not going to get that much/any snow. They all use the GFS charts so what is one side reading into them that the other side's missing?

Bonsoir ~ love the Style and Beauty tips. Sensible boots are very important in the snow/icy weather!

Drat, am flying into Liverpool on Weds and my Mum has a 1.5 hr motorway drive to pick me up Sad Don't fancy lots of turbulence (and possible diversion elsewhere, coach transfer...) with the kiddies... Ugh. And I'm only coming for 5 days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 14:13

Petunia - I have never figured out the bbc weather reports - they just don't seem to bear any resemblance to real life.

I think the met office tend to be quite cautious in their forecasts, though they are puzzling me this week. Symbols don't seem to match with words! They do use a number of models - more notably the UKMO and of course they have much more detail available to them - they can see the high resolution models.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 19:38

well, well, well. Seems that the other models are coming into agreement about next weeks low. I find that frankly astonishing (esp when we've not even been able to get model agreement about tomorrow until today really). If it really happens (and of course we are 5 days off) then it would be one of those events you always remember.

Sure it will change though!

winterpetunia · 25/11/2010 20:54

Is that the low pressure system that comes our way along the French coast? (I've been paying attention and watching that for a day or two!)
