Friday's weather - potential travel problem

I'm giving this post a thread of its own. It may come to nothing and I may end up being thought about as rather like 'Chicken little' but I'm somewhat surprised that though the met office have a number of advisories up they aren't advising about this aspect.

The forecast (and remember things change!) for Friday looks very interesting . A weather system moves across from the NW to the SE. It could end up being a rain/sleet/wet snow/freezing rain situation.

In particular I think people should be aware that evening rush-hour could be nightmarish for some in the SE and CS England - the councils are going to have a real challenge to work out when to grit. Too early - and it gets washed away - too late and the snow starts laying while the traffic is slower and the gritters can't do anything.

So, if you have rain Friday afternoon, keep a really close eye on the temps and how hard the rain falls - heavy rain when temps are close to freezing can under some conditions turn to snow and if you need to travel Friday afternoon/evening be aware that the traffic situation could possibly become rather horrid and standstillish. (rather like the week Monday before Christmas last year in fact)

Will try to update daily and let you know if this event is getting more or less likely to occur.

Thanks Dance, I know that it matters to people and I don't want to cause undue stress (or hope!) I'm sure everyone realises how amateur I am!

It is exactly that Ennis - as I said on t'other thread, none of them really know but won't put that on their websites so they give it their best shot with the model that they use. Plus when it comes to showers, normally we put up qith 'chance of howers' but a single decent snow shower makes a big difference to people.

Frustrating when we all want to know.

uh oh. worth pointing out that there is now a snow risk across Exmoor/Dartmoor areas friday rushhour/evening. (flash back to people getting stuck last year iirc).

okay, I'm going to be all self centered here. Would you travel from London to Norfolk on Friday afternoon and back on Sunday with a 4 year old, a 2 year old and a 6 week year old in the car?

Skimty - I wouldn't make the final decision until tomorrow evening. At the moment - yes, with food, blankets etc, but things change quickly in these circs. I would not travel in rush hour though, would leave lunchtimish just in case.

I'll update tomorrow morning. In the evening you'll need to be patient as I've a hosp appt that may overrun.

I think my recoomendation stands as before Skimty - if you go, go early afternoon both ways. You will see snow (quite probably today even) - I can't quantify how much, so it depends on councils. My biggest worry would be freezing rain if it gets marginal - much nastier than snow.

'I'll update tomorrow morning. In the evening you'll need to be patient as I've a hosp appt that may overrun.'

That's really sweet. Thanks so much!

I'm going to go early afternoon on Friday but wait until then to fully decide. Just can't bear the thought of being stuck with screaming baby, tantrumming toddler and a preschooler needing a wee!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 08:06

:) you are welcome.

I have to say that sounds like a hellish scenario! Would probably get you on the local news though Grin

Kitten, we are travelling from Brighton to Plymouth on Friday after school. Do you think I should be panicking? [worried emoticon]

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/11/2010 08:16

Kitten, we are travelling from Antwerp to Kent, then on to London on Friday. On Saturday we are going London to North Norfolk and returning to Belgium on Sunday. Should I preplan DD's day off school on Monday.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 08:34

Pesto - I think that could be quite tricky. Met office don't seem to be showing it but GFS shows that you could have a problem, particularly over the west country moors. (so depends which one is right). Would hate to see you on 10 o'clock news on Haldon Hill! Any possibility you can pick your dc up from school at lunchtime and go early?

Kreecher. Yes. I would. You may well be fine, but as we've seen today snow events can develop rapidly in 24 hours.

You are a star. I will have to tell DH to phone in too. He teaches at her school.

PestoEatsSnowWarnings · 25/11/2010 09:25

Kitten, we're going to pick 'em up at 2.45 and then travel to Southampton, up to Salisbury and along the A303 to join the M5. Am hoping the Salisbury stretch is going to be OK...

[worried emoticon]

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 13:35

A38 at the end of the M5? I hope it is ok for you.

OP posts:
PestoEatsSnowWarnings · 25/11/2010 13:56

Yep, that's right Kitten. DH said he's going to try and source a snow shovel too, just in case...

mankyscotslass · 25/11/2010 14:02

DH got 2 decent snow shovels from Ebay, they arrived the day after ordering!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 14:07

Theres a really good thread somewhere abouts here about what to take if you are travelling.

Is there anyone you can call when you are on the m5 to check the conditions on the A38? Then plan a couple of potential pubs you can camp out in at Exeter until the worst of it is cleared if the A38 has come to a complete stop?

OP posts:
PestoEatsSnowWarnings · 25/11/2010 14:09

We've got friends in Plymouth who we're staying with, so will give them a call to get an update I think. Good idea about holing up in pubs. Like that a lot Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2010 14:15

Grin we have done that in Derbyshire - we got stuck, couldnt get back to our hotel (this was well before the days of us having a computer) and ended up at a lovely b&b and a lock-in at a very very nice pub
