Is it going to be a really cold Winter?

It's been such an early Autumn, or so it feels...and is already really cold at night here.

I heard something about the Gulf Stream a while back - could anyone explain this to me and how it might affect us this Winter?

Or is it already doing so?

This is a debate going on as we speak on the online weather community.

It seems at the moment a 50/50 split as to whether we have a really bad winter again or a milder 'normal' one.

There are some rumours of a really bad winter like 63, and the Uk experiencing snow as early as Oct/Nov.

Personally I'd like another winter like last year, with perhaps a bit more snow Grin.

I know the country ground to a halt, but with regards to nature , it really made it a bumper summer and harvest.

To clarify, in summer, prior to the dust cloud, we may have 25 degrees and minus 17 in winter. They think this pattern will have changed for us so far north, due to the dust. Everybody is quite keen to find out what this winter will be like...

I would love to read that article Quint :)

Our harvest is ruined. Sad
The bad summer means there is not ONE locally produced punnet of strawberry. And no potatoes either. The farming community is devastated, and bankruptcy is looming for many. No income from produce this year.
There were no blueberries here either. They did not manage to ripen before automn set in. And our redcurrant trees had no yield either. Dreadful.

PavlovtheCat · 25/09/2010 09:15

i hope so, i love the cold.

PavlovtheCat · 25/09/2010 09:16

quint where are you ? we have had redcurrents, blueberries, and the potatoes are being harvested in cornwall without a problem so it seems? sorry to hear its rough for your area.

Funnily enough Quint - we've had a bumper crop of fruit this year. About 500% more apples than normal, pears where we normally get none, less plums but loads of tomatoes and herbs and even my courgettes have laid fruit!!! But we had a shit year last year so I guess it's all cyclical.

Kitten, it was in our local paper, and in Norwegian. And binned.

However, I am taking the kids to the Annual university science fair today, and they are really hot on arctic weather, biology and marine conditions, so if I see anything on the topic, I will grab it for you. It is a big event, there are research vessels down from the Spitsbergen, showing samples of finds from the ice, and lots more. All the reserach communities will show their work, be it marine polar archeology or astrophysics. Microsoft is here too. Hmm

I am in the far north of Norway.

whomovedmychocolate · 25/09/2010 09:22

I think Quint is not in the UK Pavlov

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/09/2010 09:36

that would be absolutely brilliant Quint - thank you :) (very very cool Envy - would love to go!!!!!)

Sorry Kitten. The only thing related to the weather was a brochure about the statistics collected over many years, and how to use the archives. We now have seen what real lungs of smokers look like, we have seen salmon lice, and tested some lego mindstorm robots, and we know more about polarbears, but no interesting weather reports.

But I found this resource from this weather site

cool - that looks interesting. Thanks :)
sounds like a good day out!
