Purée or BLW?????

My baby is nearly 9 months old. I started BLW but she was sick too much so went on to Purée my own food. This has been successful untill the past week. She now only wants to feed herself. I have given her loads of finger foods. Often she takes too much and is sick. It is really upsetting. This evening she really tried but kept taking too much. In the end she took baby cereal from a spoon. Any ideas as this is really upsetting. Due to family allergies I cannot give her dairy as she could be allergic to it. I am due to see the allergy nurse. She is taking lots of milk. She is EBF on demand. I began introducing foods from around 6 months. She is gaining the correct amount of weight. The HV said to keep giving her finger foods. She has four teeth at the front!

Hi, is she only sick with finger foods? When you say too much, do you mean she puts big pieces in her mouth?

How many times was she sick before you switched to puree?

If so, it could be that she's not used to the pieces of food and is sticking them too far in her mouth triggering her gag reflex and making her sick.

My DS is a similar age and likes to self feed. So I give him chopped up food, cooked quite softly, and pile it up on the highchair tray. He can then pick it up and put little bits in in his mouth at a time.

I also give DS the spoon to play with - he sometimes sticks it quite far in which makes him gag, but it gets him used to the spoon and he can learn how far to put it in.

My DS also has dairy intolerance which makes things harder in terms of food but I give a lot of meat, lentils, veggies like sweet potato. He also still has 5 milk feeds a day to make up for the lack of dairy.

She was sick lots of times (I lost count) before I moved on to purée. I did BLW for about four weeks before moving to purée! (backward!I know) She suffered reflux when ltiny. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. She gets greedy if I put too much food in front of her. She puts too much in her mouth. Some gets stuck in the front and she takes more. I am running out of ideas. Any ideas for soft finger food that I can make. Will be most welcome. If I feed her purée she will gag unless she is really really hungry. I always show her how to chew and she has lots of water. Thank you.

Hi,
I would just keep persevering tbh. (although i don't know if reflux is an issue with the vomiting). I've been doing blw for the last couple of months and we started with roasted veg such as butternut squash, red peppers, courgette etc. Anything that goes nice and mushy and can be held in their hand. Fish cakes, meat loaf. lentil burgers, fruit such as strawbs, nectarines, yoghurt etc.

Sorry can't be much more help- come on over to the blw thread on this post and see if anyone has any more ideas.

My DS does this - shoves loads in his mouth. A few times he's gagged and it's come back up again but he's got the hang of it.

What I'd suggest is giving little bits at a time and eat with her so she can copy.

Soft foods - very ripe pears, cucumber without the skin, avocado, chips.. Just test it yourself - if you can squish it with your thumb easily then it's ok.

Also try giving loaded spoons with lumpy food for your DD to self feed.

Are you worried about choking? Maybe she's just gaggig normally (part of learning) which looks worse than it is? I'd suggest speaking to your HV about a first aid course to reassure you.

She is gagging normally. I just can't stand the gagging/sick thing. It upsets me I had no idea how difficult weaning would be thank you for the tips/support.

Yes I hate it too - but I'm trying to be more relaxed about it. I avoid anything tricky like apples or crusty bread and try new foods when my DH is there as well. But generally DS is ok and we've had no problems just gagging.
