Mine had them from 6 months so i guess it must be but it is better to get the natural dried rather than sulphur dried apparently.

natural dreid are dark brown not orange
sainsburys dp them
not sure about giving them to a 7mo tbh - wouldnt they just stick to th roof of the mouth?

thisisyesterday · 01/07/2010 16:45

they're fine, but I would cut them up a bit

i've had several choking incidents with dried apricots!
(my children that is, not me)

MrsJamin · 01/07/2010 17:03

dried fruit is pretty pointless, very bad for emerging teeth, and do not contain any water. just give real fruit.

Longtalljosie · 01/07/2010 18:39

Dried apricots are a good source of iron. DD has the soft dried organic ones (Crazy Jack do them, as do Sainsburys) I rip them in half to minimise the risk of choking.

"So many parents buy these healthy snacks of dried fruit but drying it concentrates the sugar so much it's almost like giving your child a jelly bean. " (Dr Gordon Watkins, member of the British Dental Association's health and science committee)

But it's not a question of "good foods" and "bad foods", is it? If you're looking at your child's iron intake, dried apricots are useful. If you're just looking at things through a prism of how much sugar, not so much. That article itself says they're better as part of a meal, rather than as a snack. That doesn't mean don't give them at all.

I gave DS dried apricots at 5months - helps with constipation, and a good source of iron. Yes they contain sugar, but a good kind, and babies do need some sugar for their growth.
I bought the sulphur free ones from waitrose, soaked them for about 6 hours and then pureed it. DS loves it. Especially mixed in with porridge. I thought it'd be disgusting, but it's divine!!!

Thanks all. MrsJamin, Dd has loads of fresh fruit and veg (in fact that's pretty much all she'll eat at the mo) but I'm looking for some foods that I can keep on stand by in the cupboard in case of a temporary shortage of the fresh stuff. Looks like dried fruit isn't it. Ok on the odd occasion perhaps.

The question came up because ds aged 9 had them as a treat , he loves them weird child. They were lovely soft ones from m&s but defo the ones with sulphates - a very bright Orange.

Any suggestions for good occasional foods that keep are very welcome.
